If you found yourself in academia at all, you, by definition, aligned with regime priorities. You wouldn't have been able to get that far if you weren't aligned with the system.

MOST scholars kept their heads down, following w/o ??, adjusting field of study to stay under the radar. Dissent often meant death and was not an option for many.
