I was once a young visually impaired person who people often said this about. I was so socially isolated that I took anything I could as a compliment, but it also told me the conditions of acceptance--downplay your disability at all cost.

My instinct has always been to be a cooperative problem solver. If I tell someone I'm disabled, it's because I think that information might help us coordinate better in some way. It is so often misinterpreted.
