First 🧵 of Liz live blogging the #AccessibleFutures conference. Great for curious people, transportation geeks, disability folks, et al.
I'm at the Accessible Futures conference today, in a session about action & strategies for improving access to transit across all Bay Area regions. A fantastic group of people here <3 mtc.ca.gov/about-mtc/pu...

In fact I just during the break sheepishly explained to someone from MTC that I refuse to even sign up for paratransit because it has such a bad reputation and seems so broken #AccessibleFutures

Closing plenary of the day for #AccessibleFutures conference. I think we (well, the organizers) are going to pull together all the info from today and tomorrow and pass some kind of resolution and hand it to the transit agencies.

Having that info on the curb cut spreadsheet, turned my feeling of anger and not being listened to , to respect and wanting to help and contribute #AccessibleFutures

Side note I love being not the only person in the room who swivels my entire power chair to face the speakers from the audience #AccessibleFutures #MTC

Ron says this should be driven by stories but also driven by data. Do we have that data and if not how do we go about creating that! #AccessibleFutures

A good point from someone speaking now that we have to be careful that making thing more accessible for the loudest disability advocates doesn't leave out others of us. #AccessibleFutures
June 16, 2025 at 6:21 PM
And that was so great! I learned so much about reasons why they might prioritize fixing some bad curb cuts over others - not just the traffic, but alternate routes vs. the sometimes extreme costs at particular intersections! I want more info like that to be easily available #AccessibleFutures

I'm a fan, she is NOT bullshitting , she knows #AccessibleFutures

Someone who works with a transit agency and who is also blind, speaking now. He lives in Richmond, their paratransit system partners with Lyft. He pays the first 3 bucks, Richmond pays the next cost up to $17, then the rest comes out of his pocket. It works well #AccessibleFutures
June 16, 2025 at 6:45 PM
So MTC says to us, each transit system does their own thing, we can't fix it. YES YOU CAN! "I'm bored and tired, board, of hearing , we can't do that! guess who makes the rules! Fix it!" #AccessibleFutures #MTC

Rep Simon: Every day I'm proud to be able to center my life and work on disability justice *audience cheers* They don't hear enough from us because we're not in public space. Let's change that! We need you! Move into public space! #AccessibleFutures

But they can't handle both scheduling pickup and dropoff time in the shared ride paratransit system (OMFGGGGGGGGGG) #AccessibleFutures

It's been a long time since I've live-blogged or live-posted a conference but I really enjoy it !!! #AccessibleFutures

Someone is speaking now about the extreme frustrations of going across Bay Area regions. LIke, being unable to go out at night, at all!! She is hella mad. CART has given up, ASL is going strong and I wish someone would pause and transcribe / translate. but i get the gist! #AccessibleFutures
June 16, 2025 at 6:35 PM
Someone who is from SF and visually impaired is talking now about how she would like different agencies to share best practices and having :: ongoing :: training. Disabled people need quick, easy input so we can let you all know what would be cheap or free and easy to fix! #AccessibleFutures

"When doctors see us as thriving beautiful human beings instead of a pathology , we all win " *big cheers* No one is coming to save us. guess what, it's us. we will fight to become elected officials to sit on boards and commissions to write the policies that are due to us!" #AccessibleFutures

Half of these high level strategizing and networking conferences is frankly all of us disabled people sharing deeply traumatic stories!!!!!!! It's a whole thing!!!! #AccessibleFutures
June 16, 2025 at 6:12 PM
Next session at #AccessibleFutures is about MTC's cross regional standardizing of wayfinding and signage. Maps, signs, etc. that 27 different agencies use across the Bay Area.

Jade Theriault who is a fantastic comedian is at this conference doing an actually serious heartfelt speech about "boring social justice activism" (but it is also hilarious) #AccessibleFutures
