Democracy is not a prophecy; it is self-actuating.

We must choose every day to continue this grand experiment.

We must choose every day to accept the duty our forebears entrusted to us.

We must choose every day to affirm the certainty of this legacy for future generations.

This is why I keep comparing them to late Imperial Japan. Their security dilemma is self-actuating.

woman whose chrome fingernails start tapping out the tempo of any song she hears, sensors firing and servos actuating before she can consciously process the sound

typing up some words. pressing keyboard keys. actuating switches. making squiggles appear on the screen. squiggles that make you think ideas you weren't going to otherwise think.

you know. hot girl shit.

Found myself thinking of the kinetic motion out of the TOS Enterprises' warp pod caps. Trek later restored the glowy parts to future designs, but I really miss the spinning motion visible within them.

Was kinda neat to see scifi space having starships with actuating parts.

"why aren't people buying my new Torment Nexus, now with self-actuating Eternal Torment features"
Elon Musk is reaching new levels of unhinged.

I rarely rubber up outside of cons and some local stuff.

I wish I was more outgoing. I wish I was more active, both locally and at cons. Actuating convos and meetups are hard.

😔

EDIT: Fixed mislabeling of "actuating coupler" and added "shoulder articulation joint".

Always fun when a single line no-one remembers from a single show no-one remembers becomes irreparably stuck in your head, which is how I have come to refer to my children as “self-actuating media nodes” any time they’re playing happily

I just finished actuating that plan in my house. At 57. Also clear dose-risk relationship and it’s not that hard to keep exposure low.

if the hatch is too heavy to maintain a safe grip on the ladder, you may use your all-purpose stick to gain leverage in actuating the gears

I agree with this ... about 55% to 75%.

Nihilism is bad. But there is also a very large, too large chunk of the legal establishment and legal academia that treats the "rule of law" as some sort of self-actuating thing independent of politics.

It's a belief they need to be disabused of.
Yes. This. Each time I post about the hypocrisy I'm getting these kinds of cynical responses, and really, stop it. I get that everyone copes in their own way, but don't pre-give in. Fight for your actual rights. Call out the hypocrisy. Not to convince them, but to remind everyone else.
Getting a lot of replies along the lines of "oh, you rube, you still think the law matters" and it feels strategically foolish to just concede that it doesn't. Contest everything. Expose the hypocrisy.

I think there’s a tough line to walk here, one I bet I’ve stumbled on.

OT1H, the attitude Bouie is reacting to is itself a reaction against problematic takes by institutionalist liberals who seem committed to the idea that Con Law is mostly above politics, and the Constitution is self-actuating.
yes, and to be perfectly honest, i’m extremely tired of liberals doing the work of just conceding that it doesn’t matter what the document actually says and that the political battle has already been lost. bsky.app/profile/bene...
People don't seem to understand that "could the lawless SCOTUS make up an excuse based on intentionally misreading the Constitution" and "does the Constitution allow this" are different questions, and MJS seems to be arguing the latter

...constructed in the interests of ways of working, learning, self actuating, that advantage the groups with the most power to shape the spaces in the first place.

This isn't merely a matter of becoming less ignorant or prejudiced. Biases are built into our spaces, normative practices and economies

I use Claude almost exclusively for coordinating jobs and get it to work with opencode (variously DS, GLM, MiMo, Qwen etc) to do the actuating. It always wants to 'verify rather than trust' but they keep each other's downsides in check pretty well. Saves a lot of expensive token burn too.

These morons are actuating their fantasies. Big embarrassment.
Un-American.

I made a thing.
June 5, 2025 at 3:49 AM
The pendulum must be made to swing, it's not self-actuating.
