Apparently paint.net domain eventually got into hands of someone using it for adwords spam and trademark infringement, so he filed a DNS takeover, and now owns it! He didn't have to pay them! What a win. It used to be an actual paint company.

this happened because ads stopped working, then their work to compromise search results by biasing towards AdWords stopped working, then they realized being able to blame an LLM for both inaccurate placement and inaccurate information was better for ad unit sales than Having Search Work
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

This is why I’ve never played the SEO game, and (other than a weeks long experiment with AdWords in 2003) have never accepted pageview-measured ads on Daring Fireball. The way that SEO-driven ads would — not *might*, but *would* — corrupt both format and content was obvious to me.
this is the internet Google created where everyone is trying to keep page time up, word count above a certain level, etc. it fucking sucks and it’s just because everyone is trying to game the algo to make their little ad rev pittance

everything online started to suck ass the second companies realized most digital advertising didn’t work
instead of figuring out how to make advertising work (including marketing in ways that were not display ads, AdWords or autoplays) they made ads worse for the users & payments worse for websites

Good to see but astonishing it's taken so long: a full industry went straight from Google AdWords, keyword metadata etc., into GenAI manipulation. Using CoPilot for just about anything is a great example of how to see which brands dashed into it.

Marketing 101: a wide top of your funnel isn't worth shit if they don't lead to sales. Half of my job doing adwords back in 2012 was A/B testing ad copy and the other half was pruning underperforming keywords.
