Multiple projects funded by the Adaptation Fund and carried out by its national implementing entity partner in Tanzania, the National Environment Management Council, are helping vulnerable rural agropastoral communities enhance climate-resilient water supply systems, create diversified climate-smart livelihoods, improve afforestation and ecosystems, and adaptation capacity, while also improving agricultural technology, enhancing community adaptation learning and empowering sustainable farming and gardening approaches.

This webinar explored what “scalability” means in the context of climate adaptation and examined how Adaptation Fund projects contribute to scaling outcomes, both directly and indirectly. Drawing on findings from a recent Adaptation Fund case study and evaluation on scale, the session highlighted lessons on defining and designing for scale, overcoming barriers, and provided practical guidance on how scaling can be more effectively planned, supported, and tracked.

Intense, damaging floods and sea level rise have been increasing in Trinidad's vulnerable South Oropouche River Basin (SORB) in recent years. A US$ 10 million project funded by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) with the University of the West Indies and national government carries hope to help stem the tide. It aims to increase resilience of the SORB population and ecosystems to flooding, sea level rise and droughts by strengthening local planning and risk management, water infrastructure, ecosystem-based adaptation, and adaptive capacity of farmers and fishers through diversified resilient livelihoods.

During the Project Monitoring Mission in Bhutan’s Tsirang, Dagana, and Paro Dzongkhags in September 2025, we saw what community-led climate adaptation looks like. ✔️ 36,000+ people reached 💧 106 km of pipelines built 🌱 549 acres restored ⛰️ 9 water sources revived But beyond the numbers, it’s the people — the women farmers, local engineers, and community leaders — who are making this change real. The work in Bhutan shows how climate finance has greater impact when it is direct, inclusive, and rooted in local leadership. While global attention rightly focuses on how we cope with the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak at present, we should not take our eye off the ball on the issue of climate change adaptation. If anything, this current health disaster shows us how important it is to speed up support for those communities most vulnerable to the impact of climate change. The Adaptation Fund Board must continue with their important work in the current challenging circumstances, and improve their mechanisms for working remotely, while at the same time ensuring transparency and the participation of stakeholders.
