Two ducks are swimming on a mountain stream. This is a pair of Common Mergansers, photographed in early May in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Common Mergansers are large, sleek diving ducks, easily recognized by their slender, serrated red bills. Hooded Mergansers are native to North America, breeding in forested wetlands throughout the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Northwest, and southern Canada. In New York State, they are widely distributed and are common breeders in the Adirondacks, where they occupy secluded wetlands, beaver ponds, and wooded streams from spring through summer.
