This is a scenic view of Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. In the foreground is a wetland bordering the oxbow of Ausable River. Whiteface Mountain, the fifth-highest mountain in New York State, owes its distinctive shape to the three cirques which alpine glaciers carved on its east, west, and north sides.

A brown bird with long legs is wading in the shallow edge of a pond. This is an American Bittern. This bird spends its winters on coastal plains in the southern US and further south in Mexico and Bermuda. It leaves for its breeding grounds in the northern US and southern Canada in early spring. It usually arrives in the Adirondack region by late April or early May.

The image shows a large, long-legged bird in a wetland. The bird has a fish in its beak. This is a Great Blue Heron, photographed in early July in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America, reaching nearly four feet in height. Great Blue Herons are carnivorous and highly opportunistic predators. Their diet consists mainly of fish, but they will consume almost any animal within striking distance, including amphibians, reptiles, rodents, and birds. They can hunt both day and night thanks to a high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes, which enhances their night vision. Great Blue Herons hunt by slowly wading or standing motionless in shallow water along the edges of wetlands, rivers, and ponds. They spot prey by sight and capture it with a rapid thrust of the neck and head. After swallowing prey whole, they typically dip their bills in water, likely to clean the beak or to lubricate food for easier swallowing. Smaller prey is grasped in the mandibles, while larger fish are often impaled with the heron's bill and shaken to break or relax sharp spines before being swallowed.

A yellow and brownish bird with a nice neat chestnut cap is sitting on a branch in a bog in the Adirondack Mountains for upstate New York. This is a Palm Warbler. Palm Warblers breed in boreal forests, with an estimated 98% breeding in Canada. Palm Warblers also breed in the Adirondack Mountains. They breed in bogs and open boreal coniferous forests with scattered evergreen trees, usually near water. The Palm Warbler is one of the first warblers to arrive in the Adirondacks in the spring and one of the latest to leave our region in the fall.

A plant with red tubular leaves is growing on a log in a wetland in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. This is a Pitcher Plant, a carnivorous plant that devours insects by luring them with nectar, scent, and color onto a slick, trap-shaped leaf. Once inside, insects encounter slippery waxy surfaces and downward-pointing hairs, causing them to fall into a pool of digestive enzymes or microbes at the bottom, where they are slowly digested. (I must admit, taking things from the point of view of the insect, that this sounds like a horrible way to die.) Pitcher Plants can be found in bogs, tamarack swamps, and peaty areas in the Adirondack Mountains.

A small songbird with a yellow throat and distinctive black mask is perched on a bush in a wetland in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The Common Yellowthroat is a short- to long-distant migrant that spends its winters south of us in Central America or the southern Gulf of Mexico. This species is one of the most widespread warblers in the North American continent, breeding from southeastern Alaska and Yukon, across most of Canada to Newfoundland in the east, and south along both coasts to southern Florida, California, the Gulf Coast and eastern Texas. In New York State, Common Yellowthroats are found during breeding season throughout the state. Our Yellowthroats begin arriving in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks in small numbers in late April, with most arriving in May.

This is a scenic shot of a mountain range with a wet meadow in the foreground. The land, once part of a farm, was sold to New York State in 1966. At one time, the landscape included a photogenic red barn, much loved by photographers because of its rustic charm and location in the foreground of the vista. In December 2016, the aging barn was removed by New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation, because it was seen as a safety hazard. The small parking area by the road was paved and a wooden viewing platform was added. This site attracts Red-winged Blackbirds on the meadow and Indigo Buntings on the edges of the open area.
