October so here's the Omen of the Green table for Adirondark, a turn-of-the-20th-century wilderness horror survival game in development.

People enter the wilderness for mundane reasons. But then something catches their eye, something... not quite right.

Vulture capitalism, power-hungry, irresponsible capitalism...

Adirondark takes place during the Gilded Age. When robber barons are trying to get all the timber, coal, and resources for themselves. Going deeper and deeper into the Great Forest of NY puts people into contact with these Powers...

Adirondark is based in 1890s New York State. People are looking to live in the woods without much government intervention while robber barons are looking to exploit the resources.

I've got a villain I've been stewing with for a while in Adirondark who is a traveling preacher of sorts, tainted by the Dark. He goes from lumber camp to lumber camp... changing folk.

Scott offers wonderful advice here!

And timely for me too as I'm putting the final touches on my chapter for how to design Dangers and Encounters in Adirondark's Superintendents' Guidebook. And in a wilderness survival horror game... it may be wise to avoid combat.

FRPG GM Tip: Conflict is what drives story much of the time, but conflict in a fantasy game doesn’t always have to mean combat. Conducting a strategy session in which the players and characters come up with a plan to avoid an encounter can be just as much fun as fighting.

Here's an introduction to the overnighter I'm working on for my turn of the 20th century wilderness survival horror TTRPG, Adirondark: The Weird Wilderness within the Blue Line

Is there a way to sum up our turn-of-the-20th-century 🌲wilderness🌲 😱horror🙀 ☠️survival☠️ 🎲game 🎲"Adriondark: The Weird Wilderness Beyond the Blue Line" in ONE word?

In our turn of the 20th century wilderness horror survival game Adirondark adventures are called Expeditions and GMs Superintendents.

BRILLIANT or CRAZY idea?!?!

Make a character sheet for my turn-of-the-20th-century wilderness horror game look like an 1890s census sheet. It would include name, role, occupation, wealth, gear/assets, etc. Along with stats and derived stats.

Worked on prototype character sheets for my turn-of-the-20th-centuey wilderness horror TTRPG:
"Adirondark: The Weird Wilderness Beyond the Blue Line."

Modeled after some 1890 Census sheets, it seems a good idea to call them Explorer Census Sheets.

Adirondark: The Powers are immortal, and some of their critters are tough as hell. But the one that nobody has ever been able to kill? The Dark Preacher.

Dressed in black with a loon's head and wings on his wide-brimmed hat he is a prophet of The Dark.

He preaches a way to end your melancholy...

Inspired by the card game Whist (popular in the Great Camps and lumber camps) I've added a deck of cards to the gameplay of Adirondark. Here's another Behind the Trees post that talks about different ways that you can incorporate a deck of cards into Adirondark.

In Adirondark, there have been blowdowns where acres and acres of forest have been knocked over due to powerful winds. These are extremely difficult to traverse and also expose things long forgotten by humanity...

In Adirondark...

The Dark Preacher was welcomed at one of the great camps and through the power of his preaching ended up "hewing" the owners and guests.

Their spirits were clove from their bodies, leaving a terrible swath of foreboding and melancholy.

In Adirondark I'm putting an Expedition together where the Explorers come upon a Great Camp (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_C...) where a terrible tragedy has taken place.

A wandering preacher, who unbeknownst to the family who welcomed him, has ties to the Dark.

Great advice from @dicefunctional.bsky.social ! Be descriptive! Engage all the senses!

From the Adirondark Superintendents' Guidebook:
"Consider what the Explorers will sense first in every scene. Sight is a primary sense but in the wilderness there are so many other possibilities.
Tip for the GMs, writers, and worldbuilders out there;

Describe beyond just sight.

Yes, it's important to describe what is seen*, but there are so many more senses to use and toy with when setting a scene.

*or isn't, depending on the situation

Weather is a great way to challenge PCs, set the mood, add to the narrative...

In Adirondark, there have been blowdowns where acres and acres of forest have been knocked over due to powerful winds. These are extremely difficult to traverse and also expose things long forgotten by humanity...
#Qotd: I'm looking at all the snow/ice outside and it got me thinking:

What's the most impactful weather event you've had in one of your games?

How did it change the game or environment?

Snowing outside changes things a bit...

Outside in my backyard smoking a pipe, thinking, writing, creating... inspired to think about The Gray.

The Power of wind, weather, stone, and cold — the inanimate parts of nature.

What scares you about The Gray?

I've decided that I'm going to start putting a costume together for next Halloween. It will also be something I can wear when GMing my turn-of-the-20th-century wilderness survival horror game.

1890s American mountain frontier meets Lovecraft.

As it started snowing at my home today, and sticking... it got me thinking about The Gray, the Power of stone, weather, and particularly the cold. Here is a throwback to my Omens of the Gray table found on my Patreon.

Currently working on "Adirondark: the Weird Wilderness beyond the Blue Line": a wilderness horror setting that is centered on the Adirondack Mountains of the Gilded Age.

Come up against Powers like The Red (animals) The Green (plants), The Gray (rock and cold), and The Dark (anti-life alien evil.)
January 16, 2025 at 1:02 AM
Yes, it's the way people try to make sense the supernatural Powers in Adirondark.
The Red: Blood (animals, insects, etc.)
The Green: Plants (algae, trees, mold, etc.)
The Gray: Stone and Ice (non-living parts of the world: soil, weather, etc.)
The Dark: "Evil" (alien, Lovecraftian, unmake creation.)

What is the strange thing your Explorer notices that lets them know all is not right in the Great Northern Forest?

I put together a simple one-pager (front and back) of the basic rules of the TTRPG system I've been toying with for Adirondark. It is meant to be relatively quick, easy, and only use paper, pencil, d6 dice and a standard deck of cards. Check it out!
