Using fossil fuels to power data centers is bad for your lungs & wallets, especially if the fossil fuels are burned behind-the-meter with aeroderivative turbines (jet engines) & diesel generators. But developers can't wait for grid connections & modern turbines, so brace yourselves.

Alles reiner #Zufall. 🤡

"Manufacturers of aeroderivative turbines — which are based on or made from jet engines — and diesel generators have reported increased demand because of data centres seeking to bypass the grid as they wait for larger gas turbines."

The LM6000 'aeroderivative' gas turbine starts up in 5 minutes and delivers 57 MW alone (41% efficiency) or 152 MW in paired combined cycle output (55% efficiency), ramping up at 60 MW/min thanks to water-injection cooling:

JFC...the US EIA proposing using rusting engines from retired military craft to power data centres. What a marker of desperation and decay.

40 gigs of rusting jet engines = ~5.3% increase in total US GHGs, 260 mtco2-e per year

In addition to linking gas plants in development to data centers, GEM looks at how many projects are using reciprocating engines & aeroderivative units to get around the backlog on modern turbines. 1/4 of projects in development, or 45 GWs, use these inefficient, badly polluting technologies.
Global Energy Monitor: U.S. fossil gas power proposals tied to data centers have nearly doubled in the past six months. If these 378 GWs of gas plants are built, the US gas power fleet will have grown by roughly two thirds.

AI data centers are increasingly not just leaning on (behind-the-meter) natural gas-fired power (in part to evade regulatory oversight), but particularly dirty forms of natural-gas fired power.

The Ticonderoga-class cruiser is powered by four GE LM2500 gas turbines producing 60 MW at the shaft. It propels the 9800 ton ship to 60 km/h.

Those turbines are 'aeroderivative' designs based on GE CF6s. Four of those let the Boeing 747 take its 350 tons to 939 km/h.

A single LM1500 gas turbine, a J79 aeroderivative, an engine literally from the 1950s, (if that's what they're using) produces 15 thousand horsepower, and they needed THIRTY FIVE of them. Cripes.

It is terrible, but it is also kind of just a way to describe gas turbines (.. there's a whole class of gas generators called "aeroderivative gas turbines" ... because they are adapted from aircraft jet engines).

(There's a handful of them in the NEM today)

They can. Aeroderivative turbines. They just don’t want to spend the money. They would rather use your infrastructure.
