ADRIFT

Uncertainty overwhelms the main characters in these books at critical points in their lives; they need to confront their pasts in order to move forward. (Don’t judge them by my cliches.)

Afrekete is based loosely on Mrs Dalloway.

A more recent title this reminds me a lot of is The Days of Afrekete by Asali Solomon, at least in terms of pacing and style.

This epic reading year felt like coming home after a long time away. It’s not that these books felt familiar to me in style or content, but that they so stunningly articulated a feeling or a point that the universe felt briefly aligned with my soul. 🧵

I'm getting to my annual traditional a little late, given the chaos of the world right now. Still, I always enjoy doing this.

Here's my year in books! Here's what I read, in the order I read it. Thanks to all of the authors for their work -- creating a book is a labor of love!

Loved this book, based loosely on Mrs Dalloway. The Sally Seton character is heartbreaking, and the need to reach back to this past relationship feels more urgent than in the original. The interracial dynamics add a new dimension and tension to the story as well.

The last line took my breath away.

Never forget aquela festa da media laranxa no Afreketé en primero de carreira: as parellas eran Romeo e Xulieta, Tristán e Isolda, Bonnie e Clyde... Ortega e Gasset e Adordo e Horkheimer.

✊🏾💜 #BlackHistoryMonth

"Kara Provost’s analysis (1995) of Lorde’s use of Afrekete explains that Afrekete is a representation of a transgender, multi-linguistic trickster who uses their talents to traverse different spaces where people do not understand each other" she was also male, a mythic goddess between the lines

if Afrekete was real in Audre Lorde's life is maybe not the point, only she could have answered it. Afrekete is in so many Black women whom I follow on instagram only that the question whether Afrekete is real has only one answer: she is.
"the most important connection I made with this book came toward the end of it, when we are introduced to Afrekete. The relationship seemed like a dream." it is a magical ending, the book explodes at the end in a kind of initiation rite of self actualized Black female love medium.com/the-operatin...
