Did you know ? African children were whipped just for praying in their own language. In fourteen ninety one, the Kingdom of Congo in what is now northern Angola, welcomed Portuguese missionaries. At first it seemed peaceful, but behind the crosses were chains. The goal wasn't just to convert, it was to erase. By the early fifteen hundreds, the Portuguese had moved deeper into Angola, bringing not just Bibles, but brutal thoughts. They told entire villages that their gods were evil, that ancestral worship was witchcraft, and that salvation only came in one language, Portuguese. Those who refuse to convert were beaten, isolated, or enslaved. Children were taken to Christian schools, But these weren't classrooms, they were brainwashing centers. Kids caught speaking Congo or bandeau were flogged. Some had their mouths washed out with salt - water also, and if they dared pray in their native tongue, public beatings, African names were banned. People had to take on European CR. Christian names, Quina became Shoah, in Zynga became Maria, and over time many forgot their real names altogether. Traditional healers once respected in the village, were now hunted, called Sosua, the village we're now hunted, called sorcerers tortured burn, They destroyed shrines, desecrated sacred forests, cut down spiritual trees. But the resistance never stopped. Secret ceremonies continued in caves, and four US families whispered prayers in the old language, hidden from the CRease Some blended Christianity with African spirituality, turning resistance into survival. By the seventeen hundreds, the Portuguese had set up full mission. This wasn't just about religion, it was spiritual genocide, a slow ratio of African memory, language, and identity. But what they didn't know is that the spirit never truly dies today, and Gola is still home to ancient spiritual practices, still alive, still fighting, and we are telling the stories they tried to bury.
