👁️ Can light make a static image appear to move?

New research in Perception reports a novel visual aftereffect: adapting to slowly decreasing luminance can make subsequently viewed static patterns appear to expand.

in gunvolt's case it feels less like a deliberate part of the story and more like an aftereffect of "oh we need to make gunvolt a teenager so he'll appeal to young boys". the fact that these characters are children never really factors into the story, & for some reason most of the adepts in GV3 are-

dunno if it's lingering illness, the aftereffect of whatever migraine thing I had last week or depression but I just can't get up in the mornings now

Ooof. Sympathies.

I first noticed mine after I had my gall bladder out. I thought the tickly little irritation and cough I had was an aftereffect of anaesthetic. Nope! Turns out it's just GERD.

CHEKOV: Full scan. Results negative. Radiation level normal. Atmosphere and terrain are undisturbed. No evidence of a colony nor any residual aftereffect of a force that might have annihilated it.

Maybe I’m missing something. If I adapt to top left, I get a blue aftereffect of the central disk, and if I adapt to the top right, I get a yellow aftereffect. So, same adaptor (different surrounding regions), different aftereffects. If anything, aftereffects are considered low-level, isn’t it?

I think an interesting aftereffect of MIL and TB/CLE playing the WS is that some teams are going to lean super hard into "small ball" without really getting what makes these teams special. You really can win this way. You'll also lose 114 games if you do it wrong.

Talking about this a little more because it was such a striking aftereffect of my surgery experience, and I'm curious if anyone else relates.
I was in surgery for 10 hours. That's a long time to be under. It left me with a lot of post-surgery issues. One was Dysgeusia, a distorted sense of taste.

I don’t know Crawford’s tweeting history but can’t help thinking that a reporter putting their bigotry on display is an aftereffect of hanging out at the Nazi bar, and also the permission structure created by Bari at CBS.
Part of the answer to "how did we get here?" is that many major journalists—since 1998, Crawford has covered SCOTUS for PBS, ABC, and CBS—are lying bigots. Here Crawford is praising a guy who asked a dumb racist question, glitched out when asked why, then admitted he wanted a Christian theocracy.
This is a really striking tweet.

covid really changed a lot of things. Mainly due to the aftereffect of quarantine, 'something' really changed when and after it happened. Notably around people and the internet. Serial Experiments Lain kind of things and degradation.
