And also for the amazing excursion to the pollarded oaks! 🌳🐮🐷

Pikes/Pines | The Vancouvers have fallen: Emerald Ash Borers have reached Washington
A little over a month ago, the first Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis, was found in Washington State. This is devastating news, because this invasive metallic green beetle is essentially a death sentence for the ash trees of the Pacific … Continue reading →

📢 Agrilus planipennis, one of our target species, has just been detected in the EU for the first time in June 2026.

💡EFSA’s guide on plant awareness when travelling is a great reminder that even a souvenir seedling or wreath can carry pests that may greatly damage certain ecosystems.

Two beetles. Both hitchhiking on clothing, luggage and vehicles.

Popillia japonica: already detected in few EU countries.

You may think that's a cool car but watch out! it's actually Agrilus planipennis, the emerald ash borer, an invasive and highly destructive beetle.
I saw a cool car.

What's Killing America's Ash Trees
A single invasive species, barely half an inch long, has killed millions of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) across the United States since 2002. The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), a metallic-green insect native to eastern Asia, now infests at least 38 states and the District of Columbia. The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies calls it the most destructive and costly forest insect ever to invade North America. A second, less understood disease called ash yellows adds a separate threat to the same trees across parts of the Northeast and Midwest. The Beetle Behind the Damage The emerald ash borer, known as EAB, does almost none of its damage as an adult. Adult beetles feed lightly on ash foliage from late spring through early fall and leave few visible marks on the tree. They are about a third to half of an inch long, and the beetle is easy to miss even at close range. The real destruction happens underneath the bark: females lay eggs in bark crevices, and the larvae that hatch tunnel through the inner bark, carving S-shaped wounds that cut off the tree's flow of water and nutrients.

In nature, an organism may be both beautiful and terrifying. Take this sparkling emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis. The adults are ready to emerge in spring to wreak havoc on ash trees. More terrifying than a king cobra, but that is a story for next week.

This tree was treated. However, I track hundreds of blue ash trees and few have succumbed to EAB. The ones that were heavily attacked and killed had preexisting conditions, like what we see with native Agrilus beetles.

Some trees, such as ash and hemlock, are headed for extinction because of pests and pathogens that humans introduces. There is hope: scientists are working hard to identify and propagate resistant trees. The Republican Party, though, is destroying American science, and dimming hopes for these tree.

One benefit of very cold spells in winter is that it can kill or limit the spread of harmful pests and pathogens. I don't know yet whether this cold snap is enough to limit two of our major introduced insects, emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid. Does anyone know?
January 21, 2025 at 3:36 PM
Ash dieback, caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, has not been reported in North American. Emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, is destroying ash trees in most of North America, and still spreading. It has caused up to 90% ash mortality. Only blue ash is resistant among native Fraxinus.
November 23, 2024 at 8:44 PM
Climate change and introduced pests and pathogens are simplifying our forests, eliminating or reducing many tree species. Emerald ash borer endangers all native ash trees. We need to end fossil fuel use and strengthen barriers to pests and pathogen import to stop devastation of our forests.
