#Aids-Archiv
Evangelicals helped build America's anti-AIDS program in Africa, saving millions of lives. Now Trump has destroyed it. Why don't they speak out?

Growing up as an evangelical Christian at a Christian High School, I remember regularly having speakers at our Chapel and Church talk about AIDS and Africa. Bush's PEPFAR program reflected a larger zeitgeist within Evangelical Christianity. That's gone now.

www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv... People in Africa die daily because Trump, Musk, & Doge destroyed USAID. We abandoned the world’s neediest people for the egos of 2 wealthy mentally deranged men.

www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv... Learning about the success of this program, and the silence from evangelicals, is complicated and disappointing. I can’t think of something more “Christian.”

This article is several thousand words long, even though everyone knows the answer is "Because evangelicals in America worship the Republican Party, not God."

An important, compelling, and ultimately damning piece by @peter-wehner.bsky.social. The views Wehner attributes to right-leaning evangelicals regrettably apply to many Catholics as well. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

By @peter-wehner.bsky.social, an important article. I like to think that, if Americans knew about PEPFAR, they would support it, and even be proud of it. Not all of them, obviously -- but the great majority.

How Evangelicals turned their back on PEPFAR.

These 'Christians' twist themselves into pretzels in order to ignore the teachings of Jesus in their own religious texts.

Evangelicals in America "have mostly turned their eyes away from what is happening on the African continent" since Trump slashed PEPFAR, Peter Wehner writes. They have other things to do. They have culture wars to fight. And besides the people there are Black. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

"More than 75,000 adults and children are now estimated to have died because of the shutdown of PEPFAR that began less than six months ago. Another adult life is being lost every three minutes; a child dies every 31 minutes."
