So, I finished watching #DoctorWho Castrovalva. I think the final two episodes are better than the first two. Less Ainley hammery, which helps and the Castrovalvan speaking parts are all superb: Frank Wylie, Michael Sheard, Derek Waring. Waring's Shardovan gets two superb lines.

I've returned to 'Castrovalva'. Episode 2. Ainley is still incredibly hammy, but he's slightly better in the head-to-head scenes with Adric. As is Matthew Waterhouse. I like Nyssa's horror at the Master's face, which makes perfect sense. He's basically occupied her Dad. Still not sure how that works

Yeah, I mean I know why people don't like it (and indeed Ainley master) but in brief enough doses some outrageous camp nonsense is a good time.

I think one of my bigger criticisms of Classic Who is Anthony Ainley was probably The Master for too long and it probably would've been worth regenerating him by no later than the sixth doctor.

last night's fifth doctor serial was PLANET OF FIRE which features a tiny 9 inch tall master scampering about his own tardis getting into the wiring and everything, and it makes me laugh with wonder to watch anthony ainley completely enjoying every single stupid and brilliant moment he is on camera

I think Ainley is okay as the Master here but around 95% of his performance is chuckling. He's literally just a disembodied chuckle for two episodes
And then he gets to say "It's mine! The CVE is all mine!" (which I'm not sure even makes sense in the context of the episode.
And then he gets to say "It's mine! The CVE is all mine!" (which I'm not sure even makes sense in the context of the episode.

I appreciate not everyone is interested in trawling the promotional archives on these sets, there's far too much Mike Read. It is rather lovely, though, to see a promotional appearance by Colin and Nicola on Swap Shop where Anthony Ainley phones up to taunt the new Doctor.

Wow. "Planet of Fire" is such an oddity. Some of the worst American accents I've ever heard. Peter Wyngarde camping it up because he needed the money. Anthony Ainley camping it up because he was having the time of his life.

Anything with Doug MacClure that my cousins and I watched on summer weekends 😉
(Especially The Land That Time Forgot, since it also has Anthony Ainley, who went on to play The Master in Doctor Who)

I've forgotten the details, I found Roy Clarke not suiting drama but at least I saw Anthony Ainley in something else. (I've seen Blood on Satan's Claw, Out of the Unknown and that early 60s thing.)

An idea I’ve been thinking of for a while is a short story where the Ainley Master infiltrates and manipulates a squad of these rubes to complete one of his schemes

The Master is ahead on 19 (8 Delgado, 1 Pratt, 1 Beevers, 9 Ainley), with the Cybermen bringing up the rear (oooh-er) with 10. Ice Warriors and Sontarans each score four a piece.
