day 28: on thin ice
pt2 of the above. alamir you're scaring the hoes (deryk).
Deryk is in Limsa when Alamir descends upon him, darting across the plaza and dodging the crowds to leap at him with a delighted call of his name. “Alamir!” He catches him, stumbling a little with it - he always forgets that Alamir weighs less than he looks as though he should, never quite judges the momentum right - and smiles easily down at him. “How have you been?” he goes on, “How’s your… Erenville, wasn’t it?” Alamir goes abruptly still in his grip, and Deryk gets the feeling he’s stepped into something awkward. “He’s gone to explore the star,” Alamir says, and smiles with a few too many teeth. “And I could no sooner tie him down than a god of wanderers.” It’s probably not intended to be biting, but Deryk has to hold back a wince nonetheless. He doesn’t regret his travels - he couldn’t even if he wanted to, it’s still in his nature even without godhood driving it - but he knows that it costs Alamir something whenever they part. They don’t speak of it, either of them, and that’s served them well enough before. Perhaps it doesn’t serve well enough anymore, then, but Deryk doesn’t know how to bridge that. He cannot promise to stay tied down, even to a fellow traveler. Alamir cannot promise to keep moving even when the world calls for the Warrior of Light to stand and fight. “Will you be okay?” Deryk asks instead, inadequate as it feels without offering anything to soothe the hurt. Alamir looks away, something distant and wistful in his expression that Deryk doesn’t quite know what to make of. “I met another one of Mother’s shards,” he says, which isn’t particularly an answer to the question. Pauses, for a moment, and then adds, “He’s to be my enemy. I suppose I’ll have to make him see sense, one way or another. I’d hate to see him simply subsumed into Mother’s aether.” He’s smiling again, now, but there’s an odd and almost feverish light in his eyes. His tail flicks behind him, and the motion strikes Deryk as like that of a coeurl near to a pounce. Alamir goes on a little while longer, singing the praises of this enemy reflection - Calyx, Deryk learns - and all the while he does not answer the question. Or perhaps he does, without ever realizing it himself; his smile a little too wide, his eyes a little too bright, every gesture a little too fast and jerking. He is less convincingly human than he’s ever been, speaking of his reflection, and Alamir may not notice the pocket of space that the crowd has instinctively begun to leave around them but Deryk is all too aware of it. When the time comes for them to part - by Alamir’s choice, for once - Deryk is… relieved. He has never been relieved at that before, and guilt gnaws at him at the thought of it, but he cannot deny that he feels a weight off his shoulders as he watches Alamir walk away across the plaza. It’s replaced soon enough by the physical weight of the baby opo-opo climbing up onto his shoulder, returned from whatever mischief it’s been up to in the meantime, and Deryk reaches up to press a hand into the warm fur and ground himself a little. “I think,” he says, more to himself than the opo-opo, “I might need to seek out this Erenville.” Selfish, perhaps, to think of throwing someone else into a path he intends to steer well clear of. But in Alamir’s recountings he has always come across as someone attracted to Alamir’s inhumanity rather than despite it, and so of the two of them Deryk thinks he might be better equipped to bring Alamir back from the cliff that he fears Alamir is on the edge of. (Deryk, though, intends to be as far away from that cliff as he can physically get.)

Something blanks out in Alamir’s expression, when Erenville mentions it being time for him to move on. If Alamir didn’t draw his attention so consistently, he doesn’t think he would even have noticed, as quick as it’s gone again. But he does notice, and it lingers with him. Perhaps that’s why, when they get a moment to speak alone, Erenville bites his tongue on the offer he’d intended to make. 'I’ll let you know before I leave on my journey,' he says instead, and tries not to be bothered by the way Alamir seems to look through him rather than at him. It’s easier, admittedly, to shrug that off than the way Alamir smiles at him a moment later, because Erenville knows that smile; has seen him leverage it at perfect strangers when they start to show discomfort around him. It’s the Warrior of Light smiling at him there, not Alamir. It stings more than he would have expected. Well. They’ll have the length of Etheirys between them for Erenville to nurse those feelings soon enough, he supposes. (He won’t be another chain around Alamir’s throat. If that means he doesn’t get to be anything at all to him, then so be it.)

alamir and jochi both use minheight fmodel for their races so. they're small.

alamir doesn't mind it (it makes it easier to be Cute And Charming and also underestimated!), jochi doesn't Exactly mind but he does get very irritable if anyone comments on it. he gets "i thought wol would be taller"...

Calyx doesn’t know what possesses him to seek out the Warrior of Light once again. Halmarut won’t be best pleased, he knows that much, though he doesn’t think he has any intent of revealing more of her plans this time. There’s simply a pull there, one he doesn’t fully understand and doesn’t think that he likes. Perhaps that pull is, too, why Alamir’s eyes light up when he sees Calyx approach. It’s not the expression of a fated hero seeing an opponent, certainly. There’s no animosity in it at all; if anything, he’d say the Warrior of Light is delighted by his presence, if he had to put a name to it. He doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t like it. But Alamir tosses himself to the ground beside Calyx, with all the carefree recklessness of someone who’s never had to worry about too-brittle bones or aching joints, and all Calyx can really do is lower himself slowly to sit beside him. He hasn’t decided what to say before Alamir announces, as brazen as anything, “I want to make you a new body. One that’s less… well.” He gestures, here, to encompass Calyx’s current form. Calyx only stares. And stares. And stares some more. “I will not debase myself by occupying a living body ever again,” he says eventually, the same as he had when Halmarut had made her offer. Something about this seems to amuse Alamir, or at least that’s what Calyx takes from the way his lips twitch and his tail curls behind him. “It would not be like your original body,” the Warrior of Light insists, “It would be like mine. You wouldn’t need to eat, to sleep, unless you chose to. It wouldn’t sicken or die.” Calyx cannot grasp the thought in his mind. Or, rather, he does not want to grasp the idea in his mind; the suggestion that the Warrior of Light, by some process of luck or birth, is not— that he cannot— “You ate and slept in Solution Nine,” Calyx says, because that he can grasp. That throws doubt on the entire idea. The Warrior of Light goes very still. He does not breathe or blink and his eyes are so wide, so dark. And then, abruptly, he’s back in motion, leaning carelessly toward Calyx on the grass and asking, “Were you watching me the whole time?” He doesn’t sound horrified, or offended, or any of the other things Calyx suspects should be the normal reaction. There is, instead, an odd breathlessness to his tone that Calyx would like to attribute to the lack of prior breathing but that— that does not feel right. It feels anticipatory, almost. As though the answer to that question is as important to him as oxygen— ought to be. Apparently isn’t. Calyx can only nod, slowly, and watch as Alamir closes his eyes and exhales in something almost blissful. “I can do both, of course, and they have their appeals to me,” he says eventually. A beat, and then he adds, “And people get… unsettled, when you abstain long enough.” He smiles then, almost conspiratorial, and it’s charming and it shows a hint of fangs and Calyx thinks apparently not eating or sleeping might be the least unsettling thing about the Warrior of Light. He thinks he’s in over his head. He thinks Halmarut is in over her head. “I— I’ll consider it,” he bites out, when it becomes clear that Alamir is still expecting an answer to the question of a body. It feels the safest option, noncommital and nonconfrontational at once, and he’s rewarded with Alamir outright beaming at him. That too, is radiant, and if Calyx still had adrenal glands he thinks they’d be working overtime. (Calyx has never believed in gods but he has read of them, and he thinks he understands, now, the fear of them; capricious and charming and wrong.)

i like thinking about alamir in edw bc it's just. by that point he's already getting Tired of pretending to be a normal person and then he just keeps getting smacked in the face with things validating that it's not worth the effort. the garleans treat him like a monster even when he tries to act

alamir isn't affected by temperature (like he can feel heat/cold but he doesn't experience discomfort even from extremes) bc of being an alchemical construct so he'll probably be tits out on the fourth in ec. he has to make up for bundling up to fit in in garlemald.

for jochi: i think 99% of the time his shards never find yokichi's. like their ancients were a thing but they very rarely find each other as shards, jochi and yokichi are honestly a fluke in the grand scheme of things

alamir is an alchemical construct made by his azem with ancient techniques, he's pretty much indestructible and doesn't need to eat, sleep, blink or breathe (well, he technically needs to breathe to speak but. he can breathe in whatever.)

After a fight, Alamir gets… high-strung, sometimes, is the best way he can think to describe it. The others don’t seem to notice it - but, then, they’ve had years of the Warrior of Light and much less of Alamir showing himself to them properly. He still doesn’t, really, though Erenville knows he hasn’t quite realized that himself. Still. Erenville does notice it, which is why he isn’t surprised to wake in the lodgings they’ve been given in Ok’hanu and find Alamir’s bedroll empty. The others are all still asleep, and past Wuk Lamat’s snoring it’s easy enough to slip out unnoticed himself. Once he’s outside, he considers. They haven’t been in Kozama’uka long enough for the landscape to be familiar to Alamir, but… the trees across the water are most likely, he thinks. Not enough cover elsewhere in most of the places close enough for Erenville to get to easily, and he’ll prefer the elevation to lowering himself amongst the reeds. Thus decided, Erenville makes the trek across the bridge to reach the patch of woodland there and head under cover. He’s rewarded, soon enough, with the sounds of rustling in the leaves above his head, and he relaxes at the confirmation that he’s picked the right spot. Not the reaction that most people would have to those noises, he knows. But Erenville knows animals, and he knows the difference between a predator in the canopy and something mimicking one. (So do the actual predators, for that matter, and Erenville hasn’t come across one yet that would be brave or stupid enough to hunt the same quarry as Alamir in one of his moods.) When the rustling above him fails to manifest into anything more, Erenville resigns himself to a walk through the trees. Tiredness aside, it’s not so bad - the moon is bright enough to see by even under cover, and it’s no great hassle to meander his way along the path, taking in the way that the moonlight transforms the place and keeping one ear on a swivel toward Alamir’s passage through the treetops. They go on like that for a few minutes before Erenville reaches a spot that opens out a little, though not quite enough that he’d call it a clearing. It’s not a surprise, then, when the rustling above him falls abruptly silent and Erenville has a beat - two, three - to brace himself before a shape comes leaping down to crash into him from above. He rolls with the momentum, letting Alamir drag him to the ground with a minimum of bruising, and from there it’s just a case of rolling them both forcefully until Alamir lies beneath him, chest heaving fetchingly. It’s all an act, of course. They both know that Alamir doesn’t need to breathe. They both know that there’s no way that Erenville - not even a fighter - could actually overpower Alamir. They both know that even chains around Alamir’s wrists wouldn’t be enough to actually pin him down, and all they have currently is Erenville’s hand around them. But Alamir lets Erenville keep him there, staring up at him with blown-wide eyes and panting like he’s run a marathon, and Erenville just waits for him to come back down from whatever high this brings him. Eventually, Alamir’s breathing slows and then stops, and his pupils return to more-or-less their usual slits - usual when accounting for the darkness, at least - and Erenville is able to loosen the grip on his wrists. He looks put out about the last part, because of course he does. (Erenville can feel the particular stillness that says Alamir is pointedly not squirming beneath him. Erenville doesn’t want to fuck in the leaf litter and have to sneak back into their lodgings smelling of sex and mildew. Alamir doesn’t care where he fucks, and has a tendency to just smell vaguely of petrichor no matter what he’s been doing.) “No,” Erenville tells him, voice firm. It doesn’t escape him that the tone is one of scolding an unruly pet. From the way Alamir’s ears prick forward, it hasn’t escaped him either. Alamir plasters on his most endearingly pathetic look in response, and lifts his hips just enough that Erenville has to huff out a long, controlled breath through his nose. The expression would be more effective if Erenville wasn’t well aware how practiced all of his facial expressions are. The movement is— well, that one isn’t not effective, but Erenville stands firm. “Down, boy,” he mutters. Which is the wrong thing to say, apparently, at least if the way Alamir’s pupils dilate again is any indication. (Interesting. He’ll file that one away in his ever-increasing catalog of what makes Alamir tick, he supposes.) “I’ll make it up to you,” he decides on next, releasing Alamir’s wrists entirely to scrub his hand over Alamir’s cheek instead. “When we have more privacy.” Alamir takes a breath purely so that he can sigh dramatically, but subsides enough to just nuzzle into Erenville’s hand. He sighs again when Erenville’s thumb brushes against the stars under his eye, though this one telegraphs contentment at least. “It’s not as though there’s not privacy here,” Alamir comments after a while, clearly aiming for a wheedling tone and missing the mark by a malm - he knows what Erenville’s reaction will be, has decided he finds it amusing, and now wants to see it for real. Erenville doesn’t think he knows how transparent he is when he does that. (It’s… sort of charming, he thinks, this obvious blind spot in Alamir’s control over his own reactions. He’s aware most people would probably disagree.) It’s no hardship, though, to give Alamir what he wants in this instance; to roll his eyes, and pull himself up to his feet, and insist, “Privacy and a bedroll, together.” Alamir’s eyes flash with undisguised delight - he’s predicted a response, and gotten it, and is content with his lot - and he takes Erenville’s hand only to spring up from the ground in one smooth motion without ever actually putting any weight on him. It’s all part and parcel of the act that Alamir seems to actually enjoy, and Erenville isn’t surprised when he moves from the linked hands into simply leaning into Erenville’s side as they make the walk back to their lodgings. (He lets Alamir push their bedrolls together when they get back, at least, and resigns himself to the weight of Alamir’s head on his chest for the rest of the night.)
