As you can see, the downsides for sending the highest alert level to such a wide area are huge.
How do we fix this within the existing AlertReady system?

1) Alert local first: chose a travel time of just a few hours and alert locals.

ECCC creates the alert. That part is happening properly. AlertReady distributes them through the cell networks. That part is where there are issues. We don't control them.

The AlertReady tool is not an insignificant invasion of personal privacy. Maybe the cops should have that power? But they shouldn't have that power unchecked.

The reason why each regional district or town in BC needs to pay for their own system is twofold
1) The federal AlertReady system is garbage, not suitable for anything except evacuation alerts
2) The Province didn't step in an create a single alerting system for everyone to use.
