Alice Childress by Alice Neel (American) - Oil on canvas / 1950 - Victoria Miro Gallery (London, England) #womeninart #art #fineart #AliceNeel #AliceChildress #oilpainting #portrait #portraitofawoman #womensart #womanartist #femaleartist #artwork #americanart #americanartist #herstory #bskyart
Painted while American artist Alice Neel was living in Spanish Harlem. Alice Childress (1916-1994) was an Ameican actor, playwright, and novelist. She acknowledged as "the only African-American woman to have written, produced, and published plays for four decades." Childress was “born in 1916, in Charleston, South Carolina and moved to Harlem to live with her grandmother, in 1925. Dreaming of becoming an actress, she joined the American Negro Theatre in 1941, and in 1944 she was nominated for a Tony as Best Supporting Actress, for her role in the Broadway production of Anna Lucasta. After that, Childress found little dramatic material that represented the lives of black women she knew, so she began writing it herself.” Her work was primarily concerned with issues of inequality. Notable plays and books by Childress include, Florence (1949); Trouble in Mind (1955); Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White (1966); and A Hero Ain’t Nothin But a Sandwich (1973). Childress was the first African-American woman to be honored with an Obie Award when Trouble In Mind was selected as the best original Off-Broadway production. In addition to her work in the theater and as a writer, Childress was involved with social causes and helped form an off-Broadway union for actors, working alongside the Actor’s Equity Association and the Harlem Stage Hand Local Union. In her mid-30s when Neel painted this portrait, Childress had not written her celebrated plays yet, but was known for her acting. Neel presents not only her beauty in an elegant strapless blue and black striped dress, large ornate gold necklace and medallion, long gold earrings, and small short-brimmed hat, but sense the entertainment legend's intelligence through her dignified pose and expression bathed in sunlight while looking out a window.

Tonight!
I've been wanting to see this for a long time. I feel so loved having been given two free tickets. Though I would gladly pay to see anything at this historic venue.
