Um, Costco chilli? That’s what we had for dinner. Then had an argument about does cold water and soap work on melted, hardened cheese 😂

Does anyone know off the top of their heads whether Lyle, WA is allochthonous terrane?

Quality, then quantity: determinants of autochthony in freshwater food webs - Oecologia
Understanding how resource quantity and quality shape food webs is a central question in ecology. In freshwater ecosystems, autochthonous organic matter (OM) generally offers higher nutritional quality than allochthonous OM. Although freshwater consumers may preferentially forage on limited but high-quality autochthonous OM, its scarcity often necessitates reliance on more abundant, lower-quality allochthonous OM. Using tank bromeliads as model ecosystems, we conducted a five-month field experiment to test how the dietary contribution of autochthonous OM varies with its quantity. We manipulated incident light to generate a gradient in autochthonous OM availability, evaluating whether its contribution to freshwater consumer diets increased or plateaued due to foraging preferences. We combined Bayesian stable-isotope mixing models with precision-weighted beta regression to quantify diet sources and their drivers. Across the light gradient, autochthonous OM consistently dominated consumer diets (76–95%) despite being > 1,000× less abundant than allochthonous inputs. Median autochthony increased with autochthonous supply, driven by light incidence. Maximum water storage showed a weaker, marginal negative association with autochthony after accounting for light incidence, suggesting that larger tank bromeliad ecosystems exhibited lower autochthony. This pattern may reflect the fact that tank bromeliads are living plants rather than inert containers. Larger seedlings potentially take up more nutrients from the water tanks, which likely reduces nutrient availability to autochthonous primary producers. Overall, our results support a quality-then-quantity hierarchy, in which consumers preferentially consume high-quality autochthonous OM but their realized reliance on this resource is ultimately constrained by the ecosystem’s capacity to produce and retain it.

Absence of phlebotominae sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and allochthonous canine leishmaniasis cases in the Santa Catarina Plateau, Brazil
Duarte, Faiane Reila Sousa Centenaro; Ledo, Geanice; De Lima, Felipe Rieth; Padilha, Mayckon Antônio Cardoso; Rodrigues Da Silva, Márcio; Korb, Manuela Steil; Moura, Anderson Barbosa De; Chryssafidis, Andreas Lazaros; Abstract Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania spp., transmitted to hosts through the bite of female phlebotomine sandflies, with domestic dogs serving as reservoirs for the disease. Understanding the entomofauna is crucial for effective control of vector-borne diseases, such as leishmaniasis, because various environmental and climatic factors can influence sandfly presence and distribution. This study aimed to conduct a quantitative and qualitative survey of the entomofauna in urban and peri-urban areas of Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and to analyze documented cases of canine leishmaniasis in the city, in response to the rising number of non-autochthonous cases in dogs. The lack of prior studies on this fauna in the municipality raises concerns for public health services. Nine areas were monitored over the course of one year, and clinical and epidemiological records of canine leishmaniasis in the city were analyzed. A total of 10,638 insects were collected, with no phlebotomine sandflies identified. All evaluated cases of canine leishmaniasis were classified as non-autochthonous based on the movement history of these animals and the absence of the disease vector in the municipality. This information may guide further control and prevention measures for leishmaniasis in the region, aligned with a One Health perspective.

* Note that the 10% above is just a guess, and not an informed one. The authors do not commit to any number, simply stating "most of this carbon accumulation is likely to be allochthonous, and may not therefore represent newly sequestered carbon" - hence the urgent need for more research!

"most importantly, most of this C accumulation is likely to be allochthonous, and may not therefore represent newly sequestered C. It is particularly urgent to determine the origin and fate of the organic C relative to its fate in the absence of the project." I agree - even 10% would be phenomenal!
