So much of current popular online history discourse is really just an aesthetic exercise urging us to reconsider modernity, by people who think homeschooling their kids in Latin would magically unlock the ability to interpret both cuneiform and the Almagest

Exciting news for historians of astronomy -- the scholar who discovered this copy also has a quite interesting recent book on Galileo's early-career use of material from the Almagest: link.springer.com/book/10.1007... #HistSTM #EarlyModern @springer.springernature.com

Good morning Bluesky

Today the MJ daily them is "almagest", referring to an ancient astronomical manual written by Ptolemy.

"Galileo prayed each time he sat down with The Almagest." I like this idea that, when assessing the universe & the centuries of human endeavors to understand it, we are in the presence of something that is itself miraculous.
I love everything about this! The conviction that a major figure was not struck by a bolt of lightning but worked to understand the system he would ultimately critique and help dismantle. The scholarly sleuthing rare books — all of it. 😎🤓

Anyway, Gerard of Cremona wanted to read Ptolemy so much, he learned Arabic and went to Toledo, to its very Christian cathedral, to find an Arabic manuscript of the Almagest, which he translated in the 12th century.

Reading Moller's "the map of knowledge" right now and repeatedly struck by how a gut would hear about another guy in another city having the one extant copy of, like, the Almagest, and sail across the known world to high-five the *only other guy* in the Christian world who knew advanced math.

A historian has discovered that a 16th century printing of The Almagest—a highly influential ancient astronomy text—contains extensive annotations from Galileo Galilei, the astronomer who later overthrew that text’s conception of a geocentric cosmos.

Whoa: young scholar searching Florence libraries for how the ancient Ptolemy informed Galileo found a copy of Ptolemy's Almagest with marginalia in what looks a lot like Galileo's own hand. Like a frozen moment of torch passing, when a carefully tended fire from antiquity ignited something new.

Good morning Bluesky. We made it to the weekend!

The daily theme is stuck on "almagest", so here's a re-working of an older "mad sorcerer" character :)
