#AlphaFold's
No one is lamenting Alphafold’s demise because we’ ve already mined whatever utility it had (and, while useful, it was not “revolutionary”).

3) Almost nobody fears that the AI that doesn’t communicate in human language is conscious, like AlphaFold’s AI that predicts amino acid chains and protein folding. Language makes us believe LLM’s are human like. They’re not. They are performing matrix multiplication and theory-free inference.

Proteins are the tiny machines in every cell, and their 3D shape decides what they do. AlphaFold’s free database holds 200M+ predicted structures (predictions, not lab measurements). Source: EMBL-EBI / Google DeepMind, CC-BY 4.0. Made by me with AI image tools. #xhopememeprize

It is a discovery that was driven by AlphaFold's LLM infused structural work, but only because being applied math geeks, rather that structural biology dweebs, they didn't know you aren't supposed to show the unstructured parts on the same diagram as the super important springs & strands parts.

AI does not choose to help or harm. People do — until we build machines that choose for us.

Same tech, one hand behind CSAM generation, another behind AlphaFold's Nobel-winning protein predictions. The tool is neutral. The hand isn't.

I guess it depends on how much you trust their marketing, but they seem to be describing themselves much more as a continuation of AlphaFold's goals than as a pivot away from them.

Alphafold’s cool, but not perfect. Its false predictions definitely impacted a teeny bit of my research back in the day. Changed course solving my research question; felt sorry for the people who still had to use it for very novel stuff. Some insight:

AlphaFold's edge wasn't the model — it was a fifty-year dataset almost no other field has.

Two new AI-for-science systems skip that entirely. One read 551 papers in 30 minutes instead of 540 human hours.
Why AlphaFold Can't Be Copied — And What DeepMind and FutureHouse Are Building Instead - AI Founders
Everyone asks why there isn't an AlphaFold for cancer, materials, or climate. The honest answer isn't more compute — it's a fifty-year, hand-curated dataset almost no other field has.
