Bast ran his fingers through Alstair’s hair in a repetitive motion. Alstair was almost asleep when he leapt to his feet and started scrambling for his clothes. “Alstair?” Bast asked, obviously concerned. “Don’t speak to me,” Alstair snapped. “I need to get to my notes.” Bast fell back with a chuckle, and Alstair rushed from the room to record his thought before he lost it.

“Light burn you,” Alstair hissed, climbing out the other side of the tub and barely making it to the bench at hand. “Why did you follow me home?” Bast’s frown deepened as he draped a towel around Alstair. “The night I called on you,” Alstair pressed. “Why did you follow me home?” When Bast remained silent, he scoffed. “Shall I tell you? Because you judged me weak, vulnerable.” “And how long would you have lain in the mud?” Bast asked. “Not at all,” Alstair said without hesitation. “The star would have returned us to Sondrice. You judged me vulnerable, and you entered my life. Why should I object? I make no use of my position. I research solely for my own curiosity, and I’ve never had a lover. Being desired is intoxicating. Why even should I care that you acted against the church on my behalf? This conflict was inevitable. But I do resent your concern. Ash and thorn. I have given myself over to you, and still we have only touched when I had need. I offer you the use of all I have, all I am, and you would name an heir tomorrow? What do you know of me? I sent for you when I was frightened. Why? Bastiane and Alstair have just had sex for the first time. (Alstair made the mess they're cleaning up beforehand.)

Alstair really dislikes being accused of blasphemy. He prefers the charges be accurate. He -is- a heretic: he believes the church is wrong.
“Are you sure that was your first time?” he asked suddenly when his hand brushed Alstair’s over a stack of paper. Alstair froze and stared at him. “Except that brief moment last time you were here.” His tone was almost questioning, his posture almost defensive. “You surrendered so fully,” Bast said with a smirk. “most are hesitant, in first time experiences.” “Oh,” Alstair relaxed and continued with his task. “You kno what your were doing. I had no reason to doubt you.” Bastiane laughed. Alstair was contradictory indeed—almost naive in his simplicity but almost frighteningly complex. “Why do I get the impression you know more about the church’s aims than you’ve shared?” “You jump topics almost as quickly as I do,” Alstair observed absently. “And I don’t know. We’ve had call to discuss the Mysterium’s—reaction to me. We haven’t really,” he shrugged. “Honestly, we haven’t really discussed much of anything in detail.” The books and papers gathered from the floor, Bastiane settled into a nearby chair. “Why do you say they need a villain? What leads you to suspect any greater motivation than your blasphemy?’ Alstair sniffed but did not look up. “I’m a heretic,” he said, “not a blasphemer. According to the older traditions, I’m not even that.”

Alstair is not adjusting well to having someone new care for his needs
“In the morning,” Bast said, leaning against the bed opposite the window seat Alstair occupied, “I will have Martin contract the craftsmen to build out the wainscoting.” Alstair made a gesture, and, considering his facial expression, it needed no translation. Bast scratched his nose. “I’ve engaged a tutor for instruction in the silent speech.” When Alstair stared, Bast asked, “That does not upset you?” Alstair shook his head, and Bast smirked and nodded. “I… to—told you,” Alstair struggled to explain. “I—it is th-th-the c… c—oncern I r-r-r-re-sent.” Bast continued nodding. “That’s a shame,” he said at last, “but,” he sighed, “perhaps it will delay the comfort that would invalidate this exercise. Is there anything you need before you settle into bed?” Alstair looked at Bast as though in challenge, waving vaguely to the left and cocking his head. Bathing him to cool a fever was one thing. Assisting him with the routine necessities of life was perhaps another, but Bast did not hesitate to stand and wrap his arm beneath Alstair’s, helping him to his feet. Needs attended, Bast asked him where he would be most comfortable sleeping, and Alstair needed only a little assurance his tossing and turning would not be a disturbance before settling in Bast’s bed with evident relief.

Eventually, Alstair loves Bast for continued gentle, patient care without patronization, but also his casual confidence & deep seated conviction

Bast is in awe of the passion Alstair has so long tried to bury, & he is completely lost once Alstair starts caring for -him-

Alstair is immediately caught by Bast's eyes. Almost literally. The first time he spoke w/o stuttering to the man was bc he'd accidentally looked him in the eye. Also his voice

What set Bast's mind wandering is how well Alstair would fit: against him, in his hands, etc. Also his hands.

Just a moment between Bastiane and Alstair as Bastiane is learning how to care for Alstair and Alstair is learning how to accept it
“Come,” Bast said, pulling away, “let’s tend the fever.” Alstair groaned and did not move. “I resent your concern,” he said thickly. “You do not,” Bast assured him as he pulled him up to sitting. “No?” Alstair clung to Bast but did not resist as he was lifted from the bed. “Then why the bitter taste in the back of my throat?” “You resent the need,” Bast explained, carrying him down the hall to the bath. He did not have pipes as advanced as those at Sondrice, but there was a tank fed by a rooftop cistern and an easy-lit fireplace. He lowered Alstair into the tub before filling it with tepid water. “Thank you,” Alstair whispered. “This is not as common as it appears.” Bast pursed his lips and remained silent as he ran a cloth over Alstair’s shoulders. Perhaps it hadn’t been common, but his private secluded life was being torn open. Even if they avoided direct conflict, the toll on his body would increase.

Bast sighed and ran the cloth over his chest. “Do you or do you not have some form of consumptive neuropathy?” Alstair clenched his jaw and swallowed. “I do.” “Dinner will keep,” Bast declared. “Did it begin before or after the star?” Alstair sniffed. “It exacerbates, by taxing my body, but it mitigates, by—isolating the damage.” “When were you going to tell me?” Alstair looked at Bast. “Would you believe I forgot?”

Alstair just absentmindedly bit through his lip, & Bast healed it for him. The use Alstair has offered is of his political standing at court...
Bast raised his thumb and ran it across Alstair’s now healed lips. “Know this, Alstair, I do not take people in lightly, and I am possessive when I do. You are mine, now. To hold. To protect. No one will harm you again.” Alstair’s grip broke the glass he was still holding. “Why?” He could think of nothing he had done beside display weakness and hubris. “You came to me,” Bast replied. He released Alstair and pulled the bloody handkerchief from his pocket. “And you invited me to use you.” Alstair swallowed. Bast seemed to imply a use he had not specified, but it was certainly one he had dreamt of over the past week. “You fascinate me,” Bast admitted. “Few have surprised me as often over years as you did in a single day. And I seem to have you enchanted.” Alstair could hardly argue. He could hardly think. Bast pulled him all the way to his feet and bowed to press their lips together. Holding Alstair by the head and lower back, he opened his mouth, coaxing Alstair to open and explore the heady warmth and taste of a kiss before taking his lips between his teeth and pulling. “I’m the only one who bites these lips,” his voice rumbled low and smooth. Alstair had no words with which to respond, so he merely nodded. Bast returned the nod and released his host, turning and tossing both handkerchiefs into the fire.
