Current California should be AltaCalifornia
#MissionSanDiegoDeAlcalá was the first of the #Franciscan missions in #AltaCalifornia, and provided the basis for the later city of #SanDiego, #California. It was founded on #ThisDayInHistory in 1769 by Father #JuníperoSerra and used to oppress the #Indigenous #Kumeyaay people.

The #PortoláExpedition left #SanDiego to find a land route to #MontereyBay on #ThisDayInHistory in 1769. The mission, led by #GasparDePortolá, 'discovered' the #SanFranciscoBay and secured Spain's claims to all of #California, establishing the new colonial region #AltaCalifornia.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1846, the city of #Monterey, capital of #AltaCalifornia, was captured from #México by the US, launching the conquest of #California. When angry white folk complain about hearing #Spanish, it may be helpful to point out that it was here well before English.
