yeah, i'm very glad my engine teardown didn't reveal any AluSil problems. a couple cylinders had very minor scoring, otherwise not bad.

They're all the electrical complexity of a mid-2000s Audi and the plastic cooling system parts of a mid-2000s VW combined with the boneheaded mechanical construction like Alusil cylinder bores that one can only get from a genuine Porsche.

Pray 4 victimz.

The high sulfur content is extremely corrosive to aluminum block engines. Once damaged, there's no practical repair other than total replacement.

Sulphuric acid that is created during combustion attacks sensitive coatings (like Nikasil or Alusil) inside the aluminum block engine cylinders.

It's not only Porsche engines that suffer from cylinder bore scoring. Any engine using an Alusil engine block can suffer from scoring, just like this Mercedes V12.

This engine became what was to be known as Cayman X, with the first 4.2 liter MA1 engine. What's important about this picture is that you can see the healthy, stock Alusil cylinder bore, shown here with about 15,000 miles and dozens of hours of track use.

When magnified 100X, you can see the silicon particles in a Lokasil or Alusil cylinder. One of the modes of failure is when particles fracture and there aren't enough remaining ones to support the required oil film for the pistons and rings.

Engine blocks like the Cayenne V8 and 9A1/MA1 engine are cast through and through with Alusil whereas Lokasil engine blocks are cast using a process where the hypereutectic aluminum alloy is localized just around the cylinder bores.

Not much has changed since the Chevy Vega first used Reynolds A390 (Alusil). As the cylinder bores are uncoated aluminum, it requires the pistons to have an iron coating. Once the coating flakes off, you end up with galling that results in bore scoring.

As you can see, one cylinder bores is not like the others. Although direct plating is often suitable for correcting bore scoring on Alusil engine blocks, often there is damage that requires us to install aluminum sleeves, which can then be Nikasil or SUMEbore coated.
