Final proof (let’s hope) has arrived for indexing (620 pages). Thanks to all those waiting & watching. #AmIndexing #TheLongestJourney

Took a break from my #AmIndexing project to clean my desperately gross house and I am now stupid-tired

When the book you’re indexing is about interactions on social media it’s… interesting… to be on social media

Day 3 of the @indexerscanada.bsky.social conference! Today we have presentations about Canada's plain language standards, subcontracting, and a follow-up to 2025's very successful AI debunking presentation. #AmIndexing

Day 2 of the @indexerscanada.bsky.social conference starts soon! Today's topics include tracking hours more effectively, the origins of the alphabet, and how to spot carpal tunnel syndrome. There will also be an online afterparty featuring member-submitted cocktails and mocktails! #AmIndexing

Was going to do a little work today but after mistyping stuff in several emails (like “shure” for “sure”) I think I need to allow another day to recover before going back to the editing

There's still time to register for the @indexerscanada.bsky.social conference, Sorting It Out! It's happening online and recordings will be available to ticket holders for 12 months afterward. I massively enjoyed the 2025 conference and will be attending again! #indexing #AmIndexing

Ugh I hate being sick

And OF COURSE this is when a long-delayed project shows up, while I have the attention span of a gnat

A major under-covered story.
Five years have passed since Myanmar’s military staged a coup against the government.

Since February 1, 2021, the junta has decimated almost every facet of life in Myanmar.

The junta’s impunity needs to end.

I have to admit this was what pushed me to abandon Adobe Reader entirely, even though it had been a cornerstone of my work process

MY WHOLE JOB IS BASED ON CLOSE-READING TEXTS

#AmIndexing
Now instead of simply reading the abstract for an academic article I have to contend with multiple pop-ups from adobe asking me if I want an AI summary and I cannot stress enough how much I DO NOT WANT this.

@adobe.com has made a useful product less useful with an annoying and redundant feature

The author has moved on to b. Avodah Zara 4b, in which the rabbis discuss why God might be snippy at the start of the day, as all the gentiles are waking up and committing idolatry with the sun.

I love rabbinics.

The pros of indexing a highly technical but repetitive manuscript: being able to mass batch entries across whole chapters or even the whole manuscript

Cons: keeping track of which intersecting and overlapping categories I have and haven’t done

Recalling what a deeply human process it is to create a truly useful book index — not replicable by any automated or AI system, as it requires a theory of mind, a deep understanding of the audience & their likely needs, preferred search-terms, and points of confusion.

In the midst of this dystopian clusterf*** I find it amusing that history books will have a "Portland frog" entry in the index.
