And for my first case as Warden Sergeant, I’d like to open an investigation of guild practices – namely the cellar and how it is used. I’ll need access to the arrest records of every person who has been imprisoned there, and a statement from Captain D’Arqeur and yourself.”

“Oh, hold on-” Foxtail dropped into a crouch and waved Nev down too. Footsteps pounded up the walk towards them. Seconds later an overexcited hound raced by with something clutched in its jaws, cropped ears flat against its skull and thin tail straight as an arrow behind it in the speed of its revelry. A lone warden trailed after it, panting hard, his feet scuffing in a slow jog. “Shit,” he gasped, doubling over just yards away from them. If he so much as turned his head, they were caught.

“Melle.” Nev dove after her and barred her path. She hardly dared to even whisper this close to him, but Melle’s finger was on the trigger for gods’ sakes. In a matter of minutes their search had gone from break in to attempted murder, and they stood a hair’s breadth from doing away with attempted. “Melle, whatever you hate him for, whatever he’s done to you, this isn’t the answer.”

A desperate, terrified, agonized scream, raw and ragged and deafening in the quiet room, and after it all, Renique was smiling. Nev threw the former thief away from her, but she let out another panicked wail that made her grinning face into something ghoulish. Behind Renique the door rattled with a key struggling to fit while the deeper, urgent tones of the warden shouted for backup.

Deafened and gasping for air, she crawled. The ceiling, it was going to come down on her- The window, she had to find… the window… Her weeping eyes settled on a dark spot. Her way out? She blinked away tears and it coalesced into… into a… shoulders, body, a white face like bone, person or beast. It stretched out a blackened claw. She tried to pull herself out of its reach, but the inferno in and swatted at her hands. The entity seized her scarred forearm, and she bucked in pain.

Weatherside. Tarnished bronze named the street against the blackened bricks. Nev stepped back. Part of the wall had crumbled beside the streetsign and the ruinous dark inside resisted daylight the same way the pit of the mines drank in the sun, but in the gloom appeared marks in the soot coating the inside of the walls. Surely she imagined it, so faint and faded that natural weathering took on another shape in her mind. But the long claws down the walls looked all too much like handprints scrabbling for the broken windows.

Today was a slog, as it took forever to streamline 3 pp. But my draft is up to 26 pp. that flow!

I still need to formalize citations (& revise with reference to more oral histories & letter mss from the time). But I've gotten my author from her parents' lives through college, motherhood & WWII!

I'm getting really really tired of this section, in which I try to explain that Author #5 was interested in #OscarsSoWhite avant la lettre in the 1930s, before the Party was. I might leave it alone after one more revision, & move on. The repetition & disorder might be easier to fix with fresh eyes!

After a moment the plaques ceased altogether, the wall ahead blank for a few paces, marked by one single plate of brass. A nearby red lantern threw its epitaph into sharp relief: The Nameless Dead. Nev let her pace slow as she passed it by. The blank gap was almost as wide again as the close-set plague victims. These too had all died of plague, unknown, nameless corpses from the last months of its rampage when so many had died so quickly, recording had not been able to keep up with the losses. Corpses found months too late in houses, hostels, streets. Bodies collected and left uninterred until their identities had been forgotten. Dead by the dozens simply carted off and burned to ash, leaving no remains to identify.

Been using #Scrivener for over 10 years. Took a class on Scrivener features last night…and did not know over half of them. Mind. Blown. I have layers upon sub-basements of features yet to learn, apparently.

OH I'LL GIVE YOU SYNONYMS) This is [scary]. Actually, Frogbo couldn't think of a greater [terror] than this—but in lieu of less than another choice would this just have to do. On tremble-legs stood Frogbo acrest boxen tower-top, the wavy upwind of road just one jump ahead. An empty space tweenst box and road rest. The gap was small, yes, but any size meant a big thing when up so tall. Would even *we* feel strangely stood pon such great heights. Frogbo was falling all this time… since then, tailing tow with Bunibo. No longer, though: go-so they alone Frog-forth into unknown—where the smallest trip meant the biggest fall! A [frightening] thing to accept. Turning 'round and down, Frogbo peeked pon Bunibo below: still kept she waving, dress windswept. Frogbo waved back with their feets in hands' stead, then kipping both back up and over their head—creating a heart-shape with their legs. She's far away, but very clear—Bunibo shaped a heart-sign back with floppy ears. *Brave be.* Turning forward, Frogbo took their first step.

He climbed into the pipe and reached a hand down to help her up, then pressed the tail of his coat into her palm. Nev’s boots slipped on the rounded floor as she scrambled after him in a forced half-crouch in the narrow passage. She clamped her mouth shut to force her nose to blind to the stench, but as each step stirred up a fresh bubble of rot worse than the last, her stomach abruptly turned over, and she bent double for a few steps, holding her breath. Falleu, do not let me be sick in front of him.

Nev folded the letter and tucked it into her breast pocket. No matter that Whitforth would notice it missing. He'd be noticing a lot more than that if she could get that door open. As she pushed the desk drawer back in, something rattled inside. Nev felt around the back of the drawer until her hand closed on cold, toothed metal. A brass key. It turned in the lock, and her heart soared with relief.

When I first wrote this, I had no idea who this was... but there's not a doubt in my mind anymore.)~ We woke witless within white. Why? Wholly white. Was this not the usual eclipsed expanse which well we recall. Know not this. Where's Frogbo? Are- *"—you lost, LITTLE ONE?"* Um. Speak someone? White's light cannot we seek, yet within inverse-shadow walk in… twin feet? Privy- *"—do you talk like that?"* Feets gave way to knees gave way to waist gave way to face. The face is looking at us. *Her* face. It's a woman. Big Lady. Brought forth from Beyond, bequested, beformed, befe- *"Why do you talk like that?"* …Have we not been spoken to in quite a time. Pray pardon plenty. So forth, uh, forward… speak us plainly. I—*we*'re sorry. We're a bit lost. *"It must have been lonely."* It was. *"Who are you?"* **Æbon**.

Nev balked, not expecting to be put on the spot. "Their leaders," she finally said. "We know Foxtail isn't acting alone. Put a bounty on them, get their own people to give up their names. Without leadership, the movement scatters and fails." Imani laughed without humor. "Stealing from the guild and Antolliers' most wealthy to fund the uprising has been one of Foxtail's most prolific crimes. Offering more would just invite a feed of false information while we bankroll our own enemy."

Another boom rattled the lit sconces, and the light behind them flared. Ahead, at the end of the entrance hall, the pair of arched wooden doors already hung partly open, the transom windows twin pictures of the night sky. But Nev halted. Smears of blood lacquered the hall, staining the carpet in large, round blotches and speckling the wall panels in violent arcs, viscous paint almost black in the limited light.
