The Kingdom of Kush had a notable line of Kandake (Candace) warrior-queens throughout its history, who not only ruled the kingdom but also personally led their armies into battle — the most famous being Queen Amanirenas, the "One-Eyed Queen", of the 1st century BCE, who fought against Roman forces.

Classical scholars are all like "how can you not know there were Africans in Greco-Roman antiquity?" but it looks to me like there isn't an entry for Amanirenas (African queen who took on Augustus in Roman occupied Egypt) in either OCD4 or Brill's New Pauly

To be fair Romans loved to myth make a story of a woman in love defying them to the point of myth (Cleopatra, Boudicca, Zenobia) it comes from Dido; they never did it with Amanirenas because they lost.
