#Amanitin
Galerina marginata (funeral bell) photographed last week in San Mateo County, California. This deadly mushroom is common on well decayed wood and contains α-amanitin and β-amanitin at similar concentrations to death caps. To me, they taste like cucumber.

you're right, that was alpha-amanitin that you synthesized, which is why your liver and kidneys are failing after consuming it. that's on me.

my bad.

For #FebruARTy and #artyear From Wikipedia: "α-Amanitin (alpha-Amanitin) is a cyclic peptide of eight amino acids. It is possibly the most deadly of all the amatoxins, toxins found in several species of the mushroom genus Amanita."

No Tox Tuesday today, sorry. But here's a Fountain Pen & Ink structure. I had an awesome poem to go along with it, but there were too many characters 😔. Amanitin is the toxin of "Death Cap" mushrooms ☠️

MY STUDENTS ARE AMAZING!
Here’s our group costume! We are dressed as….alpha-amanitin, the most deadly (and my favourite) protein produced by fungi. 🍄

Amatoxins are somewhat terrifying. What they do is scramble RNA, disrupt protein synthesis, and kick off cell death. But there is one application where something that might be useful (if you can make it at least a bit targeted) - chemotherapy. 🧪

The genus Amanita contains the most deadly fungal species, the death caps. These fungi contain the toxin alpha-amanitin which binds to the RNA polymerase II basically stopping your cells from working. The toxin destroys your liver and despite modern medicine 15-25% of cases are fatal. 2/3 🍄📷🧪🦠

I've got the sauce:

1. brush with doramand
2. rinse with radium wodder
3. mix some α-Amanitin in the rinse water.

Profit?

disclaimer: for the sane people reading this (I'm not really worried about y'all but) DO NOT EVER EVER DO THIS.

Disappearing atom label bug strikes again. On the late news the ongoing trial of the woman accused of poisoning her guests with a laced beef Wellington. Featuring this backdrop of what I clocked instantly as alpha-amanitin. #chemsky 🧪

The Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) is the most poisonous of all mushrooms, responsible for 90% of fungi-related deaths each year. Famous victims include Emperor Claudius and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. The toxic constituent is α-Amanitin, which causes liver and kidney failure. #fungifriends 🍄

Another species ofAgarics, including some of the most potent toxins, a-Amanitin.
There are also members of the species of agarics that are edible.

As an avid #mushroom hunter, I am acutely aware of the deadly toxin, alpha-amanitin, which is found in death cap mushrooms. A forager learns to identify the deadly mushrooms first!

Noah’s article describes how this toxin is being studied for cancer treatments. 🤯

alpha-amanitin? aflatoxins?
People have a very romantic view of nature…

Not forgetting Pierre Chambon's 1970 paper which used the differential sensitivities of the three RNA polymerases to the mushroom toxin α-amanitin to further characterize the differences between them.

This year I’m going to be dressed as me, but holding a bottle of tonic water. I’ll let you figure out what that means.

Last year I made my students dress up with me in a group costume: we were each a codon/amino acid of the wee protein alpha-Amanitin (which will kill you, and we slayed)
I know it's August, but here's a free geology Halloween costume idea:

A sports jersey and cheer pompom and foam finger, but they're all gray/brown and say "sediment" instead of a team name.

You'd be an alluvial fan.

The amanitin-containing mushrooms like A. phalliodes (death cap), destroying angel, etc. are so terrifying. Minor symptoms until about a week after ingestion your organs shut down, you go into a coma, and you die.
