I first went to the #amazonofeurope in 2011, to an area where sand martins flourished. Back then it seemed doomed because the river was to be regulated for shipping. But talk of regulation has been replaced by active restoration measures & the local community has embraced it. @fm4.orf.at

The Mura-Drava-Danube biosphere - the #AmazonOfEurope celebrates its 5th birthday today. One project: reintroducing the #sterlet, Europe's smallest sturgeon, via #Slovenia's first hatchery, right on the Mura. Thousands released, aiming for a self-sustaining population by 2030.
