Amazon RDS supports Multi-AZ for SQL Server Developer Edition
https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/ now supports Multi-AZ deployments using Always On Availability Groups for SQL Server Developer Edition. Multi-AZ deployments maintain a synchronous standby replica in a different Availability Zone and provide automatic failover during infrastructure failure. You can use this capability to build and test high availability configurations in non-production environments using Developer Edition, which includes all the functionality of Enterprise Edition at no license cost. You can use this feature to validate your high availability architecture, test failover behavior, and develop against production-equivalent configurations without incurring Enterprise Edition licensing costs. Multi-AZ with Always On Availability Groups is available on SQL Server Developer Edition major versions 2019 and 2022, and on SQL Server 2025 Enterprise Developer Edition. SQL Server 2025 Standard Developer Edition does not support this feature. For more information about the AWS Regions where this feature is available, see https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/sqlserver-dev-edition.html. Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports Resource Governor
https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/ now supports resource governor, a Microsoft SQL Server feature that enables customers to optimize database performance by managing how different workloads consume compute resources. Customers can use resource governor on RDS for SQL Server Enterprise Edition database instances to prevent resource-intensive queries from impacting critical workloads, implement predictable performance in multi-tenant environments, and efficiently manage resource allocation during peak usage periods. RDS for SQL Server provides stored procedures that allow customers to implement resource governor configurations such as resource pools, workload groups, and classifier functions. Using these features, customers can allocate and control CPU, memory, and I/O resources for different database workloads within a single RDS for SQL Server instance. For more information about configuring and using resource governor, refer to the https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Appendix.SQLServer.Options.ResourceGovernor.html. Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports Developer Edition
https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/ now offers Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition. SQL Server Developer Edition is a free edition of SQL Server that contains all the features of Enterprise Edition and can be used in any non-production environment. This enables customers to build, test, and demonstrate applications using SQL Server while reducing costs and maintaining consistency with their production database configurations. Previously, customers that created Amazon RDS for SQL Server instances for development and test environments had to use SQL Server Standard Edition or SQL Server Enterprise Edition, which resulted in additional database licensing costs for non-production usage. Now, customers can lower the cost of their Amazon RDS development and testing instances by using SQL Server Developer Edition. Furthermore, Amazon RDS for SQL Server features such as automated backups, automated software updates, monitoring, and encryption for development and testing purposes will work on Developer Edition. The license for Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition strictly limits its use to development and testing purposes. It cannot be used in a production environment, or for any commercial purposes that directly serve end-users. For more information, refer to the https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/sqlserver-dev-edition.html. #AWS #AmazonRdsForSqlServer #AwsGovcloudUs
Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports retaining CDC configurations when restoring database backups
Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for SQL Server now allows maintaining Change Data Capture (CDC) settings and metadata when restoring native database backups. CDC is a Microsoft SQL Server feature that customers can use to record insert, update, and delete operations occurring in a database table, and make these changes accessible to applications. When a database is restored from a backup, CDC configurations and data are not preserved by default, which can result in gaps in data capture. With this new feature, customers can preserve their database CDC settings when restoring a database backup to a new instance, or a different database name. To retain CDC configurations, customers can specify the KEEP_CDC option when restoring a database backup. This option ensures that the CDC metadata and any captured change data are kept intact. #AWS #AwsGovcloudUs #AmazonRdsForSqlServer
Amazon RDS supports Multi-AZ for SQL Server Web Edition
Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for SQL Server now supports Multi-AZ deployment for SQL Server Web Edition. SQL Server Web Edition is specifically designed to support public and internet-accessible web pages, websites, web applications, and web services, and is used by web hosters and web value-added providers (VAPs). These applications need high availability, and automated failover to recover from hardware and database failures. Now customers can use SQL Server Web Edition with Amazon RDS Multi-AZ deployment option, which provides a high availability solution. The new feature eliminates the need for customers to use more expensive options for high availability, such as using SQL Server Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition. To use the feature, customers simply configure their Amazon RDS for SQL Server Web Edition instance with Multi-AZ deployment option. Amazon RDS automatically provisions and maintains a standby replica in a different Availability Zone (AZ), and synchronously replicates data across the two AZs. In situations where your Multi-AZ primary database becomes unavailable, Amazon RDS automatically fails over to the standby replica, so customers can resume database operations quickly and without any administrative intervention. For more information about Multi-AZ deployment for RDS SQL Server Web Edition, refer to the Amazon RDS for SQL Server User Guide. Amazon RDS for SQL Server enhances differential and transaction log restores support
https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/ now supports differential and transaction log restores for instances configured with Multi-AZ and instances with read replicas in the same region. The native SQL Server backup and restore component provides an essential safeguard for protecting critical data stored in your SQL Server databases, and it allows you to migrate your databases between different environments, such as from on-premises to Amazon RDS for SQL Server. Differential backups are cumulative backups of all data changes that have occurred since the most recent full backup, while transaction log backups record every single transaction in the database. Combining these with full backups you can create a disaster recovery strategy to minimize data loss. Previously, customers who needs to use native SQL Server differential and transaction log restores were required to remove Multi-AZ and Read Replica so that the instance is in Single-AZ mode, restore the databases, and then reconfigure the instance back to Multi-AZ and Read Replica. Now customers can reduce the restore time by using differential and transaction log restores directly on these instances without having to convert them to Single-AZ first, while keeping Multi-AZ working for high availability, and read replica working to serve read workloads in the same region. For more information about using differential and transaction log restores, see the https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/SQLServer.Procedural.Importing.html. This feature is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon RDS for SQL Server is available.

Amazon RDS for SQL Server launches optimize CPU with new generation instances for up to 55% lower price
Amazon RDS for SQL Server launches optimize CPU with support for M7i and R7i instance families, which reduce prices by up to 55% compared to equivalent previous generation instances. Optimize CPU optimizes Simultaneous Multi-threading (SMT) configuration to reduce commercial software charges. Customers can lower cost by upgrading to M7i and R7i instances from similar 6th generation instances. Furthermore, for memory or IO intensive database workloads, customers can get additional cost reduction by fine tuning optimize CPU configuration. RDS for SQL Server price for database instance hours consumed is inclusive of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft SQL Server software charges. Optimize CPU disables SMT for instances with 2 or more physical CPU cores. This reduces the number of vCPUs, and the corresponding commercial software charges by 50% while providing the same number of physical CPU cores, and near equivalent performance. The most significant savings are available on 2Xlarge and higher instances, and instances that use Multi-AZ deployment, where RDS optimizes to reduce SQL Server software charges for only a single active node for most usage. For workloads that are memory or IO intensive, customers can fine tune the number of active physical CPU cores for further savings. RDS for SQL Server supports M7i and R7i instances in all AWS Regions. With unbundled instance pricing, database costs are calculated with separate charges for third party licensing fees per vCPU hour, and third party licensing fees are not eligible towards your organization’s discounts with AWS. You can view Microsoft Windows and SQL Server charges associated with your usage on AWS Billing and Cost Management, and in monthly bills. For more details, visit https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/pricing/, Amazon RDS User Guide and AWS News Blog.

Amazon RDS for SQL Server enables encrypting native backups using server-side encryption with AWS KMS keys (SSE-KMS)
https://aws.amazon.com/rds/sqlserver/ now supports encrypting native backups in Amazon S3 using server-side encryption with AWS KMS keys (SSE-KMS). When customers create database backup files (.bak files) in their Amazon S3 buckets, the backup files are automatically encrypted using server-side encryption with Amazon S3-managed keys (SSE-S3). Now, customers have the option to additionally encrypt their native backup files in Amazon S3 using their own AWS KMS key for additional protection. To use SSE-KMS encryption for native backups, customers must update their KMS key policies to provide access to the RDS backup service, and specify the parameter @enable_bucket_default_encryption in their native backup stored procedure. For detailed instructions on how to use SSE-KMS with native backups, please refer to the https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/SQLServer.Procedural.Importing.html. This feature is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon RDS for SQL Server is available.
