A couple days ago I got to traipse through this rad boggy marsh and it was so fun. Felt like I was time-traveling.

Squeezed some gorgeous non-native fish and also saw a gazillion snails. Apparently ambersnails (as suggested on iNaturalist) require dissection to id to species.🤷

A marsh full of cattails and western skunk cabbage, which has HUGE leaves. One of the little terrestrial snails on the underside of a skunk cabbage leaf. Inexplicably, the only fish present in the watershed were pumpkinseeds, haha. Closest native population is like...Minnesota. Very pretty little fish, though. Here they are in breeding colors, with a checkerboard pattern, orange bellies, and red edged opercular flaps. These two small adults fit easily on my hand.

Pulled up the weeds and turned over the dirt, sending critters of all shapes and sizes running for the hills.

This one fortunately has no legs and very stubby “feet”; moving at the pace of a sloth, while munching on moss, grass and other vegetation.
