Which also means, as I argue in the culminating post in my Returning to Deadwood blog series, that the show makes a beautiful argument for the best of community as resistance & alternative to the forces of incorporation—& an embodiment of our collective ideals.

As I write in the next post in my Return to Deadwood blog series, Wu frustratingly upholds certain stereotypes of late 19C Chinese Americans & yet also shines a light on the racial violence they consistently faced. & by introducing his grandson, the movie adds a beautiful multi-generational layer.

I spent the last day of this year's #EAAS2026 conference in Bologna attending a panel discussion on Teaching #AmericanStudies in Europe, a panel on US #DokuPoetry, the concluding keynote on the representational history of #CrispusAttucs & eating delicious pasta. Full brain + full stomach = ☺️

So thrilled to be able to take part in this year's #EAAS conference in Bologna. Today's opening was wonderful, not least for seeing so many colleagues & friends from all over #Europe and the US come together to discuss the state of our field & examine different "Visions of Freedom." #AmericanStudies

Laurel was incorporated in 1882--& while that term means something specific for a town, this town's incorporation around the lumber industry is impossible to separate from broader AmericanStudies contexts such as the late 19C "incorporation of America" & the concurrent "rise of the New South."
