Amphicyon ingens, not a bear, not a dog, but a bear dog. The extinct carnivoran had powerful jaws - check out the sagittal crest atop the skull for jaw-closure muscle attachments - and tracks made by such a beast have been found in the 19-13 million year old layers of CA’s Barstow Formation. 🧪

Quick sketch of “Amphicyon” confucianus, based on a photo of a complete (apparently unpublished) specimen on the Shanghai Natural History museum’s website. Recent papers consider this species to not be Amphicyon, but it hasn’t been given a new genus yet.

Not a bear, not a dog, but a beardog.

Amphicyon ingens was an impressive predator with long claws, powerful arms, and a lot of biting power. If you look at the skull, you can see the ridge that provided extra space for jaw closing muscles. Crunch. 🧪
