Artist @cannupahanska about his work “Midéegaadi” for ENCODED 🔊🔊🔊 An unsanctioned augmented reality intervention at the @metmuseum open now through December 31st! “This work presented in this context confronts the way American art has systemically worked as propaganda to erase us Indigenous people and therefore our connection to this place. Those “pastoral” paintings in the American Wing show an empty continent waiting to be claimed — a lie that built the myth of America itself. By placing buffalo dancers onto those static scenes, I’m reanimating what was intentionally erased. Midéegaadi call back the original inhabitants — the buffalo and their human relatives — and insists that our relationship to this land never disappeared. This activation is a gesture of joy and survival, a reminder that American history might be frozen, but Indigenous culture is alive and moving.”
