#AnAnimalADay
Today is the 4th anniversary of #AnAnimalADay. 4 years ago today, I decided to brighten up Twitter, and now Bluesky, with fun animal facts. I did so for the last 1,460 days straight, never repeating an animal. With that said, I think it's time for a break. #AnAnimalADay is going on indefinite hiatus

Today’s #AnAnimalADay is the Desmarest’s Hutia! It’s also called the Cuban hutia because this large rodent is found only on the island of Cuba. It’s the largest of the hutias, which are found throughout the Caribbean. Unlike many rodents, they don’t burrow and prefer to nest in tree or rock holes.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Yellow Garden Spider! This common spider is found from S. Canada all the way to Colombia. Though this somewhat large spider may seem scary, they're not aggressive at all and will only bite as a last resort. Even then, their bite is comparable to a bee sting for danger.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is a silly looking frog with a big attitude: The Budgett's Frog! This S. American amphibian, when threatened, is quite aggressive. It will puff up, scream, and bite with that wide mouth. In winter, it will encase and hibernate in a cocoon of dead skin to survive the cold water.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Malayan Tiger! 1 of the 6 tiger species alive today, it's native to certain parts of Malaysia, and it faces numerous threats from humans. Poaching and habitat destruction are killing these beautiful big cats. We must support conservation efforts to save tigers worldwide.

Today’s #AnAnimalADay is the Carolina Chickadee! This small bird native to the SE USA can often be found in flocks of 8-10 with a pecking order. Unfortunately for the chickadee, its flock often includes other birds as chickadees have a habit of loudly calling out when they find a good foraging spot.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Pike Killifish! Aka the topminnow, those teeth may look ferocious in the photo, but these little guys rarely reach over 4in in length. But that doesn't mean they're not mighty predators in their environment with a special top jaw designed to catch and swallow larger prey

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Belted Kingfisher! This fishing bird of North America is somewhat unique in the bird world in that the females are more colorful than the males. Females have the brown/orange "belt" across their stomach that the males lack. They dive headfirst into water to catch fish.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the African Lion! This so-called "king of the jungle" (they don't live in jungles) has captivated us for literal centuries, and records of them being shown in "zoos" date back to the Roman Empire. The male's trademark mane is an indicator to females of good health for mating

Today's #AnAnimalADay is something you might not have seen before: The Northern Olingo! This arboreal critter from C. America kinda looks like a squirrel with its slender frame and bushy tail, but it's actually a member of the raccoon family. It mostly eats fruit, and figs are its favorite food.

Hi to all my new friends on #Bluesky! Today's my birthday and on my birthday I like to do something a bit different for #AnAnimalADay. I want to see the animals you love. Instead of me sharing an animal, I want y'all to share your favorites with me on this post and fill Bluesky with awesome animals!

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Lowland Anoa! This wild cattle species is basically a small water buffalo lives a solitary life in Indonesia. Sadly, due to human interference, this beautiful buffalo is endangered and less than 5000 individuals likely remain in the lowland forests they call home.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Moustached Tamarin! Named for that pale fur around their mouths, this monkey is found in Central and South America. They're tiny little fellas, weighing barely over 1lb on average. They eat a lot of different fruits, so they're vital for seed dispersion in their habitat.

Today’s #AnAnimalADay is the 2nd largest fish alive on earth: the Basking Shark! This massive shark routinely grows to 26ft long and is completely harmless to humans. It’s a slow moving filter feeder. It likes to slowly feed near the surface, almost like it’s basking in the sun (hence the name).

As of today #AnAnimalADay will be posting exclusively on Bluesky! For my first post, let's meet an all-time favorite: Hoffman's 2-Toed Sloth! People think they move slowly bc they're lazy, but it actually helps them survive on a low-energy diet of leaves. Follow along for a new animal every day!

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Harris's Hawk! Native from Mexico down through S. America, this raptor is unique in that it will actually hunt in cooperative packs, unlike most other raptors that hunt solo. They're very smart and can be fairly easily trained, so they're popular in falconry/captivity.
March 15, 2025 at 1:00 PM
Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Japanese Giant Spider Crab! Its leg span can reach nearly 4 meters, making it the longest-legged arthropod in the world! Despite being just a bit freaky looking, they're actually considered a delicacy in Japan, and Japan has protections in place to stop overfishing it.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Chinstrap Penguin! Pretty easy to see where this wannabe boyband member gets its name. They're native to Antarctica/S. Pacific, and they can swim up to 50 miles in a single day in search of food. To sleep, they micro-sleep in 4second increments thousands of times per day

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Black-Breasted Buzzard! This member of the hawk and eagle family is native to Australia, and it's actually a species of kite (not a vulture). They love to eat the eggs of other birds like emus, and they're well-known for using rocks to crack open the eggs to eat them.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Common Blanket Octopus! This is a fairly large octopus, at least for females, which can grow to 2 meters long. Males on the other hand don't get above 3cm! The males and smallest females carry stolen tentacles from Man O' War jellyfish for protection and hunting.

Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Purple-Crowned Fairywren! Not hard to see where this name comes from with that great violet dome, but this Australian bird isn't just making a fashion statement. That purple plumage is sported only by males & only during breeding season as a sign to the female fairywrens
February 6, 2025 at 2:00 PM
Today's #AnAnimalADay is the Stygian Owl! Native to Central and South America, the name "Stygian" specifically refers to the river Styx, and it gets the gloomy name from its dark plumage. Unlike most other owls, hunting bats makes up a large chunk of this owl's diet while rodents do not.
February 2, 2025 at 2:00 PM
Today's #AnAnimalADay is the American Kestrel! This is both the smallest and most commonly found falcon in North America, though its extensive range also includes a large chunk of South America. They're commonly used in falconry and are experts at hunting other birds, even ones twice their weight.
February 23, 2025 at 2:00 PM
Today's #AnAnimalADay is kinda fun to say: The Marbled Murrelet! This sea bird of the Pacific Northwest is a relative of the puffin, though the don't tend to form in such large flocks like their cousins. Instead they forage in shallow water in pairs if it's a couple collecting food for their chicks.
