This analog computer project is perhaps my longest ongoing electronic's project. From perfboard prototype to PCB, the Adder module is iterated upon…

The final (1.0) boards/PCBs for my hobbyist analog computer (Anna) are finally rolling in from Asia. As I complete the manual, I'm playing with "programs" on it.

I switch to "scope mode" and reset the integrators to display a "harmonigraph" simulation I wired up.

My hobbyist analog computer project coming along… The "strip chart" displays two voltages from the computer: an implementation of the Lotka–Volterra equation depicting prey population (red) & predator population (orange). (Red LED indicates overload.)

George Dyson, historian of technology: as we build an essentially unlimited amount of digital processing, more of our computing ends up resting on continuous functions. Analog is back, whether we like it or not.

I "programmed" (patched) Lunar Lander. A special "metering mode" on "Anna" reads analog voltages representing gravity, thrust, velocity, position—displays a small lunar module descending.

(Breadboard is not for prototyping—it's how you program/wire-up the modules!)

The "Liberate the Machines!" book is starting to be available so I made a page for it even if it hasn't had a launch moment yet.

AI will soon demand more energy than the world can currently supply. Unlike AI, biology solves problems efficiently, without massive energy consumption—our brains are not digital computers.

How A.I. Is Changing the Way the World Builds Computers
Tech companies are revamping computing — from how tiny chips are built to the way they are arranged, cooled and powered — in the race to build artificial intelligence that recreates the human brain.

"Spring+Mass" is, I have heard, the "Hello World" of analog computing.

"Anna's" pair of integrators connected in a circular arrangement give rise to oscillation. Pots control spring constant, dampening, mass…

(ADCs & an ESP32 on "MAIN" give a visual representation.)

Hybridization in progress ! I had not done this for a loooong time, but I really enjoy prototyping like this.

Modular means I can add a breadboard to "Anna" if need be…

This harmonograph program has not 2, but 4 pendulums! (2 pendulums for the X axis and 2 pendulums for the Y.)

That's over 52 wires of code!

(The longest program I have, um, written yet.)

I'm not really looking for analogue computers anymore but I could not resist this small one: a gorgeous Philbrick Researches RP-F manifold from around 1966. I have not yet checked if it is still operational...

A nice detail from Bernd Ulmann's demo: the little car on the oscilloscope begins as a circle, and a function generator bends it into shape. Nudge the generator and it stretches into any form, drawn from continuous signals rather than pixels.

Clive England of cray-history.net on Cray supercomputing: rather than analyzing one problem in exhaustive depth, the idea was to run tens of thousands of simulations in parallel and study the average of what came back.
