Bleach bypass is a relatively simple film development technique that creates rich blacks, low saturation, and increased contrast. In this article, I’ll share techniques, samples, and recipes for better bleach-bypass results on film. You will need to know how to develop colour-negative film at home  (it’s not that hard!) and have a development kit with separate bleach and fix (no blix) or an extra black-and-white fixer.

Vladyslav Krasnoshchok's 'Documentation of the War' offers a profound exploration of the Russian invasion of Ukraine through an analog photographic process. By capturing the daily realities of life in Kharkiv, Krasnoshchok creates a visual narrative that transcends traditional photojournalism, immersing viewers in the emotional and psychological impacts of war. His work highlights the destruction of infrastructure, the presence of military forces, and the resilience of civilians, all rendered in high-contrast black-and-white prints that evoke a timeless quality. The artist's methodical approach—using film cameras, developing his own negatives, and printing in the darkroom—creates a deliberate separation from the immediacy of digital media, allowing viewers to engage more deeply with the subject matter. Krasnoshchok's project reflects on how war distorts reality, blending documentary elements with surreal imagery to convey the irrationality of conflict. The final images, such as the haunting photograph of a man and horse fleeing darkness, leave viewers with lingering questions about hope, tragedy, and the human condition in wartime. This work, published by Red Hook Editions, stands as both a testament to artistic resilience and a critical commentary on modern warfare.
