Squatting and protests against the housing crisis were already taking place worldwide as far back as the 18th century, and certainly even earlier. We want to share information and discuss this topic, with a particular focus on the squats and struggles in former West Berlin. We will also explain the infamous ‘Berlin Line’, and an eyewitness will recount what the situation was like on the ground at the time of Klaus-Jürgen Rattay’s death. To this end, we will be screening the film: Houses, Hate and Street Fights The Revolt of the West Berlin Squatters (RBB 2006, 45 mins, by Eckart Lottmann) is a historical documentary about the course of the squatters’ movement in West Berlin in the 1980s and 1990s, focusing on the events of 22 September 1981, when the CDU Senator for the Interior, Heinrich Lummer, adopted a policy of force against the squatters. In a large-scale police operation, he had eight squatted houses cleared simultaneously, leading to violent street clashes and the death of the 18-year-old squatter Klaus-Jürgen Rattay, who was struck by a BVG bus on Potsdamer Strasse. We dedicate this evening to Klaus-Jürgen Rattay. Solidarity with the squatters at the Hugohaus/Gürtelstrasse. Stay strong!

Through the precise, second-by-second synchronisation of video footage and police radio communications, the Genoa Legal Forum has demonstrated that the Italian police were largely responsible for the escalation of violence, showing how security forces deliberately targeted 300,000 anti-globalisation demonstrators, culminating in torture and the murder of Carlo Giuliani by a carabiniere. The murder of Carlo Giuliani, the raid on the Diaz School, and the arrest and mistreatment of hundreds of demonstrators at the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa were undoubtedly a high point of repression during summit protests. Uri was a musician and a prominent figure in Barcelona's underground scene, as well as a tireless activist within libertarian circles. His life (and death) left a very deep mark on many people. It's a documentary put together by Lluís Huedo, with Hara Kraan's support in production. It features live performances by a dozen bands, interviews with organizers and participants, and it's engaging even if you're not familiar with the event itself. The film goes beyond that —it touches on themes such as self-organization, direct action, Barcelona's underground scene, being countercultural, memory after death and friendship. Hara Kraan will be there.
