This is my drawing of a spooky sculpture of Ankou, the Breton personification of death, from the church of Lannédern in Brittany. His name possibly derives from the Celtic 'nek', meaning 'to perish'.

‘Ancou’ is found in Welsh ‘angau’ and Cornish ‘Ankow’, from *ankowes.

According to Fleuriot p64, the word ‘samo’ is hisperic (that learned Latin used by Irish monks or influenced by them) and has been glosed ‘monte’ in the archetype. But when the scribe was copying this manuscript, he misread ‘morte’ and glosed the glose as ‘ancou’, without copying the original glose.

That is one that Breton speakers will recognize. It is, of course, the word ‘Ankoù’ which the personification of death in Brittany.
