anemonefish. Sea anemones protect anemonefish from predators, and serve as a safe nest. The anemonefish get food from anemone leftovers and the occasional dead anemone tentacles. In return, the anemonefish defends the anemone from its predators and parasites and nitrogen excreted by the anemonefish

Wiki: Anemonefish are protandrous sequential hermaphrodites, meaning they develop into males first, and when they mature, they become females. If the female anemonefish is removed from the group, such as by death, one of the largest and most dominant males becomes a female.[16] The remaining males move up a rank in the hierarchy. Near-complete local extinction on Red Sea reefs!

During the 2023 heatwave, 100% of host anemones bleached, 94–100% of anemonefish disappeared, and 66–94% of anemones died, collapsing an iconic mutualism.
