People keep describing all the edgy things their morally grey book boyfriends do and to me it’s like three of Shah Rukh Khan’s early roles stacked in a trenchcoat. I was trained on Baazigar, Darr, and Anjaam as a teenager. These allegedly darkity dark white boys could never.

I was sceptical about rewatching Anjaam (1994) because my memory from 30 years back of that one scene where Shivani (Madhuri) bites off a pound of flesh from one of her oppressors’ arm was way too disturbing. But I took the plunge and am glad I did. Some thoughts 🧵 #DesiWatch

I was sceptical about rewatching Anjaam (1994) because my memory from 30 years back of that one scene where Shivani (Madhuri) bites off a pound of flesh from one of her oppressors’ arm was way too disturbing. But I took the plunge and am glad I did. Some thoughts 🧵 #DesiWatch
In the most telling scene, she stands on a terrace overlooking the city and proclaims that the city is a battleground. It is an open declaration that though her wounds may be personal but they have been enabled by the systemic injustice bred by unfettered capitalism and its enabling institutions.

I feel the need to argue that the film belongs to Madhuri. The discourse about the film tends to centre almost entirely on Shah Rukh. Shah Rukh is outstanding as the villain. And unlike Darr, Anjaam has an outstanding hero in Madhuri.

Shivani gets married to Ashok (Deepak Tijori) much to Vijay’s agony. His encounter with Shivani in the song “Channe ke khet mein” is the perfect setup that establishes Shivani as the prey through the lyrics and Vijay as the relentless, obsessed predator.

Anjaam forced me to confront my own tendency to label a film, measuring it against moral standards of current times. The only label I could comfortably assign to the film is that it is staunchly anti-capitalist and is pro-women in a traditional Indian context, stopping short of being feminist.

For a while in the early 90s women on-screen in bollywood had the privilege of being part of stories that talked about consent, even if told via a somewhat gratuitous lens. Anjaam fits snugly in this format but is a hard film to slot as either “conservative” or “progressive.”

Shivani follows the trope of the wronged traditional minded widow but to a viewer in 2025 it is unmissable that both Deepak and Vijay were harmful to Shivani. Women being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea is my favourite way of reinterpreting Anjaam and Darr.

J'aime beaucoup ta critique @unijibi.bsky.social , elle résume très bien le film. Faudrait juste rajouter la mort totalement surjouée de SRK (je l'aime beaucoup, mais il meurt vraiment très mal, quelque soit le film)

Any expectations one starts out with are exceeded spectacularly by shah rukh’s depiction of Vijay. He channels his charm and mannerisms into a palpable edge, perfectly capturing Vijay’s descent into pathological obsession. He’s scary but remains human if not humane- a uniquely SRK quality.
