The article details the extensive preparation Anne Bancroft undertook to portray Annie Sullivan in the 1962 film 'The Miracle Worker,' based on her 1959 Broadway stage performance. Bancroft immersed herself in the role by depriving herself of sight for extended periods to understand the experience of blindness, visiting the Perkins School for the Blind, and studying communication methods used by deafblind individuals. She mastered the tactile manual alphabet to communicate authentically with her co-star Patty Duke, who played Helen Keller. The role required physical exertion, including intense, unchoreographed scenes that caused bruising and injuries, necessitating heavy padding under costumes. Bancroft's dedication was documented in a 1959 Life magazine photo essay by Nina Leen, showing her practicing daily tasks blindfolded. Her efforts earned her a Tony Award for the stage play and an Academy Award for Best Actress for the film. The article features 40 behind-the-scenes photographs from this preparation process, highlighting Bancroft's commitment to authenticity in her portrayal of Annie Sullivan.
