Good news: Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence handed down to a Sri Lankan migrant worker for blasphemy. Whether he will remain imprisoned though is unclear.
October 15, 2026 at 2:34 PM
Anojan Sivarasa's death sentence was overturned, but he's still in a Saudi prison. A lower court hearing on Oct. 17 could decide a new sentence, acquittal, or even a renewed death penalty.

Blasphemy is a non-crime. It relates to opinions about matters that are subject to belief rather than fact. It should be ended worldwide.

Anojan's case is, tragically, not unique. Blasphemy laws remain punishable by death in 12 countries. Our Nigerian colleague Mubarak Bala was similarly detained for making 'blasphemous' comments on Facebook. Both cases demonstrate how blasphemy laws persecute minorities.

A man's life has been saved.

Due, in no small part, to international pressure and widespread outrage against Saudi blasphemy laws.

But Anojan's future remains uncertain. He remains imprisoned, and is now at grave risk of being murdered by vigilantes.
