* Texas has seen a dramatic rise in infant mortality and abandoned newborns found in dumpsters and ditches since the state banned abortion. * Republicans have cut funding for prenatal care and family planning services, and undocumented women are avoiding medical care due to fear of deportation. * The state's safe haven law, which allows women to relinquish babies to authorities without questions, is underfunded and barely advertised. * Republicans have allocated $165 million to crisis pregnancy centers, which aim to keep women pregnant until it's too late for an abortion, rather than investing in safe haven laws. * The author argues that Republicans prioritize punishing women for perceived sexual transgression over saving lives and providing support to pregnant women in crisis. * The article suggests that Republicans are willing to accept the deaths of newborns as a consequence of their abortion ban, rather than taking steps to prevent infant abandonment. * #AbortionBan * #TexasAbortionBan * #InfantMortality * #NewbornAbandonment * #ProLife * #AntiChoice * #ReproductiveRights * #WomensHealth * #FamilyPlanning * #SafeHavenLaws * #CrisisPregnancyCenters * #RepublicanPolitics * #AntiAbortionActivism https://www.salon.com/2025/01/02/newborns-are-being-left-in-dumpsters-in-texas-but-dont-seem-to-care/

* The article discusses how abortion bans in red states, such as Texas and Georgia, are resulting in women's deaths due to lack of access to timely abortion care. * ProPublica has reported on several cases of women dying in these states, including Porsha Ngumezi, who bled to death after a miscarriage due to hospital staff's fear of performing a surgery that is also used in elective abortions. * The Texas maternal mortality board has decided to skip reviewing deaths of pregnant women in 2022 and 2023, which may have resulted from delays in care caused by the abortion ban. * Anti-abortion activists are lobbying to rewrite current abortion bans to remove exceptions that allow doctors to abort failing pregnancies, instead forcing them to induce labor, which can be fatal. * The censorship effort by these activists is not only impacting the data about abortion ban-related deaths but also erasing data needed to save the lives of pregnant women. * The article argues that anti-abortion activists do not care about women's lives and are prioritizing their "pro-life" brand over actual lives, with some even romanticizing women's deaths as a noble sacrifice.
