#AntiHeroism
I don't watch a ton of tv compared to movies/books, but fwiw, it would be nice to see a list less obsessed with peak tv antiheroism? 1
Just a bizarre top end of the list. Parks and Rec at #50, 30 Rock as the best comedy of the 21st century at #8? Fleabag at #5? Game of Thrones at #6? Girls at #13? White Lotus at #21? Black Mirror at #26?

And I loved Succession, but #4?

Learning that Frank Herbert (an Irish Catholic) wrote "Dune" in part to argue that JFK (also an Irish Catholic) should not be President because he could be easily manipulated by scary nuns was my personal St. Patrick's Day miracle: slate.com/culture/2024...
The Problem With Dune: Part Two
TikTok is full of people tediously explaining Paul’s antiheroism. That’s the kind of treatment this movie deserves.

The Dune movies are big dumb spectacles that strip out everything that was interesting in the books. But, everything that was interesting in the books was inseparable from their dour reactionary politics. Good essay by @zunguzungu.bsky.social. slate.com/culture/2024...

Lrt I've tried to put a certain level of...I don't know, 'ugliness' or 'discomfort' around Morgan in this one, push against the boundaries of Acceptable Antiheroism without also going full edgy heel. From early reactions that balance seems to have been successful!

apropros of hmmmmmm nothing, i am thinking about how poison ivy's evolution from supervillainy to antiheroism can be directly linked to her near-consistent portrayal as an ecoterrorist over the last 30 years

i think that this is a losing proposition. if you are selling "we are corrupt and we suck but the other guy sucks more" why would anyone choose the lesser of two evils. sell heroism. sell antiheroism. sell anything but "i am slightly less worthless than the other guy"

oh my god it’s vicious antiheroism

Is this a classic of the so-called "golden age" that stands up? This week's classic SF essay is a look at the Venusian antiheroism of Fury (1947) by power couple Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore.

Thanks for the words about it! I agree there's definitely a sense of antiheroism that some players will struggle with breaking into, given that the mechanics push you one way and the setting pushes you another, but I think therein lies a lot of the best parts of the game's thesis.

i am a comics casual but i feel like i would bet that if i looked for visual analogy to this in golden age comics this is a traditionally evil presentation being used for antiheroism, ie, a dude in black with a skull on him and dramatic lighting from above.

Geuss’s “unpopularity” stems from his refusal to simplify. Ott notes his resistance to media spectacle and normative blueprints, making him a philosopher’s philosopher - challenging, not comforting.

Which makes it even weirder that Millar wrote Wolverine the way he did. I'm not sure what his intention was: did he mean for Logan to be a villain? Or did he think he was still on the more sympathetic side of antiheroism?

Like, there's a wealth of really fascinating antiheroism that gels with a lot of the mood of the time, to say nothing of opportunities to put the sidekick in a more active role

and yet.

'megamind sopranos' is likely a misremembering of the Dreamworks animated movie Megamind, which did not feature content or characters from The Sopranos, an HBO drama series about mafia life. Despite a shared theme of antiheroism, the worlds and stories of Megamind and The Sopranos are not connected.

One of many things I like about Taylor Swift is that both of my kids now find it funny to swoop in and own their mistakes & messes by yelling “ME!! I’m the problem, it’s ME!” and they get to smirk & think they’re all clever and I get to say GREAT, clean it up BYEEE #SwiftParenting #AntiHeroism

Like Ishmael, Kyon possesses zero supernatural abilities. His "antiheroism" is his endurance—he is the buffer that prevents Haruhi's volatile emotional whims from tearing the universe apart.

There are so many resets/pickups in this scene, so Tripplehorn prob spent days nearly nude on set with a fully-clothed Costner, shooting all of these

Mariner gives Helen's naked body a DISGUSTING, lengthy once-over, drawling, "Know what I was really thinkin?"

This is reprehensible 😑
