I have personally done this with deer; held them with me during #hunting season. I spoke to hunters & asked them not to kill the deer. They were respectful to me & stopped killing my deer friends.

One of my favorite talks at the African Canines in Conservation Conference explored training village dogs as trackers and detection dogs to aid antipoaching units. Importing a dog from Europe is the norm now, which can cost $5,000+. The pups performed well but they’re still refining the process!

The paper is #OA & in @iajournal.bsky.social. It sets out in great detail exactly what the training regime consists of. Anyone advocating the need for more forceful responses in tackling #IWT & #Antipoaching needs to read this and rapidly reconsider their position.

ACB: when thinking about antipoaching, we think abt the problem at the time these laws addressed. imagine instead of flipping default, Hawaii experienced rash of gas station robberies and so flipped presumption for gas stations only. ok?

What @sheldricktrust.bsky.social does every day. They operate the most successful orphan elephant rescue in the world. Orphans are rewilded.

They do conservation, antipoaching & have mobile vets who save critters in need of help. Support them via their store.
