#PortraitThursday – The Antinous Mondragone, a colossal 95 cm-high marble head of the deified Antinous, c. AD 130. Part of an acrolithic cult statue, its 31 drilled holes that once secured a metal headdress. Its idealised features recall Dionysus and Apollo.

🪷 At the December Solstice in 128 AD #Antinous and #Hadrian visited the #Delphi #Apollo Oracle. We do not know if #Antinoos heard the Delphic oracle's words. But the priests apparently adored him, lovingly burying his statue upright. More images here: antinousstars.blogspot.com/2025/12/anti... 🪷

Statue of Antinous in the guise of Apollo, discovered in 1894 during excavations in Delphi.
On local bronze coins, Antinous took the appellation Propylaios (of the Gate), meaning that the statue probably stood in front of the gate at the entrance to the sanctuary.
