Indeed, Vabalathus also minted coinage at Antioch-on-the-Orontes where he featured alongside the emperor Aurelian, such as this silver Antoninianus ca. AD 270.

The Senate nevertheless acclaimed him emperor. Tacitus then went to the army, where his appointment was accepted. He reportedly promised to govern with the authority of the Senate and presented himself as a ruler chosen through senatorial deliberation rather than military force.

Third-century hoards are huge because the coinage collapsed: the antoninianus fell from roughly half silver under Caracalla to silver-washed copper by the 260s. Frome, 52,503 coins, showed the other half - the pot was too big to lift once full, so it went in the ground empty and was filled there.

Definitely. I distinctly remember having "Constitutio Antoninianus" rolling through my brain ad infinitum when I was playing hockey on a friday night in junior year of high school. These words would become a stim if unchecked lol

⚔️ ROME PUT ITS ENTIRE FUTURE IN THE HANDS OF A 13-YEAR-OLD.

Gordian III became the youngest sole emperor in AD 238, then marched east against Persia's Shapur I. He died mysteriously in AD 244. An AU-graded silver antoninianus.

⚔️ ONE DIED IN BATTLE. THE OTHER DIED OF PLAGUE IN WEEKS.

Trajan Decius fell fighting Goths on the frontier. His son Hostilian was crowned Emperor, then killed by plague in weeks. A certified antoninianus and a rare Antioch tetradrachm.

Net daarom gaat 't zo hard c. 260-270.

Once I have a steady income again, I'm going to get hardcore into ancient coin collecting! It seems to be a relatively cheap hobby depending on what you're looking to find!

From my Roman coin collection, a silver Antoninianus of emperor Philip the Arab.

Radiate crown Roman coins—most notably the antoninianus (introduced by Caracalla in AD 215)—feature an emperor wearing a distinctive, spiky sun crown. This headpiece symbolized divine authority, immortality, and a direct association with the sun god (Sol Invictus).
