I cannot stress this enough: the reason I make all these jokes about Lithuanians being obsessed with trees is because we are. Our first great epic poem was an allegory about the loss of our independence told through the perspective of someone wandering a forest that has been chopped down

It’s Rosh Hashannah, & I’m delighted to let you all know that MACEVA has finished the fieldwork portion of this project.

They’ve found over 1000 graves in Anyksciai, Lithuania, many of which were buried under layers of moss, & most of them are legible. This has exceeded my wildest expectations. 😭❤️
You may remember that I've posted about this before, but MACEVA, an amazing Lithuanian non-profit, has been documenting the Jewish cemetery in Anyksciai, Lithuania, where my grandfather was born. When they started the project, they thought there were only 150 graves left.

They've found 530, so far.

Seminal Lithuanian poem "the Anykščiai Grove" categorically disagrees. Indeed, in its text it is stated that the forest (which is sentient) says "blessed is the hand that made the ax" when it sees the people of the surrounding area starving, encouraging them to get into forestry to survive.

Being good little treehugging Lithuanians, the locals are initially thoroughly repulsed at the idea of cutting down their brother, the Forest, even weeping while wielding the axe.

Milda stands before the cracked mirror, drops two glowing pills on her tongue and swallows dry. Her left eye twitches once. In her bag the old mint tin rattles with tiny plastic dinosaurs.

Oh, that reminds me, you might be interested in this: The cemetery documentation project in Anyksciai, Lithuania that I helped fundraise for is finally online with like 1050 gravestone photos. And several of the gravestones claim to be for grandchildren of the Vilna Gaon, which is unexpected.

European Energy Expands Battery Portfolio With 545 MWh Now Operational
Since the beginning of the year, European Energy has brought battery systems online at Kvosted, Agersted, Stouby, Kragerup and Måde in Denmark, as well as Anykščiai in Lithuania and Saldus in Latvia. “Battery storage is developing into an important part of our business. We have spent the first eight months of the year building an operational portfolio, while at the same time advancing a much larger pipeline across our markets,” said Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy. “Having capabilities across development, construction, operation and energy trading gives us flexibility in how we structure these projects and how long we retain ownership.” The batteries brought online so far in 2026 are co-located with renewable generation, allowing European Energy to add storage capacity to sites where the company already has experience with the underlying renewable asset, grid connection and local electricity market. For European Energy, this creates an additional opportunity to enhance existing renewable projects and develop hybrid assets with a broader revenue base. Beyond the value created for individual projects, battery storage can also support the wider electricity system. By storing electricity when renewable generation is high and releasing it when demand is higher, batteries can help reduce pressure on...
